Job Description
Position Summary

The School Nurse provides comprehensive health services to support the physical and emotional well‑being of students and staff across elementary, middle, and high school campuses within Tyrrell County Schools. The nurse promotes a safe and healthy school environment that enhances student learning by managing student health needs, responding to medical emergencies, and collaborating with families, school personnel, and healthcare providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Health Services

Provide nursing assessment, first aid, and care for students and staff during illness or injury.

Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policy.

Develop and implement Individual Health Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic health conditions and meet with appropriate staff to review any changes in IHPs.

Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.

Educating students on hygiene and safety practices.

Taking students’ temperatures when fever is suspected.

Administering first aid and CPR.

Treating minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Concussion protocols.

Provide preventative care.

Health Monitoring and Compliance

Monitor student immunization compliance and assist with required state reporting.

Conduct health screenings such as vision and hearing as required by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Assist with communicable disease prevention and health monitoring within schools.

Collaboration and Support

Maintain confidentiality by staying in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA laws.

Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns.

Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and teachers to support student health needs.

Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 meetings when health accommodations are required.

Serve as a liaison between the school district and community healthcare providers.

Training and Health Education

Provide training for school personnel on medication administration and emergency health procedures.

Promote student wellness through health education and prevention strategies.

Other Responsibilities

Assist with emergency preparedness and school safety planning.

Maintain compliance with standards established by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Qualifications
Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.

Current CPR and First Aid certification.

Experience

Experience in pediatric, community health, or school nursing required.

Experience working with children or adolescents preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of nursing practices, pediatric health issues, and school health programs.

Ability to respond effectively to medical emergencies.

Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, staff, and families.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive health information.

Strong organizational and record‑keeping skills.
