Sterile Processing Technician- Evenings

Position Overview
Provides clean, prepared, and sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical and clinical procedures. Works as a clinical resource under the direction of the SPD Supervisor or Manager of Sterile Processing. Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Location: Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge. Full‑time, hourly position.

Responsibilities

Receive, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, distribute, and store medical instruments and equipment.

Perform detailed inspections to verify cleanliness, proper function, and correct assembly according to manufacturer instructions and departmental standards.

Apply approved sterilization methods—including steam and low‑temperature processes—selecting the appropriate method based on device requirements.

Complete end‑of‑day operations: finalize instrument processing for scheduled and add‑on cases, ensure adequate instrument availability for the next day’s surgical schedule, restock sterile storage and case cart areas, and verify that sterilization documentation is complete and accurate.

Communicate critical information to the next shift, secure work areas, and assist with department readiness for next‑day operations.

Maintain compliance with infection prevention standards and ensure timely availability of sterile supplies across clinical and satellite areas.

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Work Experience:

Preferred 2 years of sterile processing experience or graduation from an accepted course in Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology.

Certifications (preferred):

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) – International Association Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)

Certified Sterile Processing Department Technican (CSPDT) – Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)

Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) – CBSPD

Demonstrated computer skills with data entry and retrieval of patient information; proficiency with Windows applications.

Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.

Good organizational and time‑management skills.

Judgment in performing duties and conflict resolution.

Ability to convey pertinent information to patients or staff in a timely manner.

Maintenance of required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials.

Adaptability to positive change.

Job Duties

Perform general and specialized instrument care duties.

Provide supplies as needed for surgical procedures.

Disassemble and clean critical reusable medical equipment in accordance with Manufacturer's Instructions For Use (MIFU).

Inspect, package, and reassemble surgical instruments and trays according to established priority.

Practice high‑level disinfection, pre‑vacuum sterilization, gravity displacement sterilization, and hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization techniques in accordance with MIFUs.

Maintain record keeping and document control per standard operating procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements.

Adapt behavior to the patient population, respecting privacy, and adapting communication style as appropriate.

Other related duties as required.

Physical & Environmental Conditions
Frequent lifting of 10 to 20 pounds; occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. Exposure to hazardous medications or waste is possible due to receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, and disposal of contaminated waste.
