Duties & Responsibilities
This position resides in the Business & Income Taxes Division of the Department of Revenue. Duties include conducting technical-level examinations on assigned tax returns, researching, verifying data, adjusting returns, communicating with taxpayers and their representatives, and participating in the appeal process. The examiner assists in developing audit programs and procedures, drafts summary reports of audit findings, and testifies as an expert witness. The examiner also assists other tax examiners and provides support services to taxpayers and department programs. The position does not supervise staff.

Telework Information
This position may be eligible to work from an approved worksite within Montana. The training period of six months is 100% in‑office. After training, the user can work up to three days per week remotely, with two days required in the Helena office.
Training Assignment
Employees in a training assignment may be paid below the base pay established by agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

Typical qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or public administration supplemented by college coursework in accounting or a closely related field, plus one year of job‑related work experience in auditing, tax examination, or accounting practices. Other combinations of education and experience are evaluated on an individual basis.
Salary
$56,124.00 – $58,024.00 per year.
