Amazon, Austin, TX, United States
Product Design Engineer, Data Center Engineering - Electrical Products and Services
Job ID: 10404549 | Amazon Data Services, Inc.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Are you excited to design the next-generation electrical power distribution solutions that power millions of AWS customer experiences and shape how the world accesses cloud technology? You'll join a collaborative engineering team dedicated to delivering resilient, cost-effective electrical systems for our rapidly expanding global data center network.
As a Product Design Engineer, you'll focus on creating innovative medium‑voltage switchgear, power distribution equipment, transformers, and protection systems that meet the demanding requirements of AWS's global infrastructure. Your day might include collaborating with cross‑functional teams to refine product specifications, evaluating design modifications to enhance reliability and cost efficiency, or partnering with manufacturers and testing laboratories to ensure compliance with international standards. You'll work alongside colleagues across multiple regions, translating complex technical requirements into practical solutions that support our customers' cloud infrastructure needs.
We are Amazon Web Services' Electrical Products and Services Engineering team, a collaborative group focused on achieving industry‑leading uptime through cutting‑edge design and continuous improvement. Our vision centers on advancing electrical distribution technology to support AWS's expanding global data center network. We work closely with manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities, and engineering service providers worldwide to deliver world‑class quality.
Travel: This role requires up to 25% domestic or international travel to support global projects, manufacturing sites, and compliance testing activities.
Key Job Responsibilities
Work with internal partner teams to solicit customer input and define design requirements for product design.
Lead new product design, development and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS datacenters including LV and MV switchgear, power distribution cabinets and panels.
Develop Capex and Opex spending budgets taking into account development costs with vendors, prototyping needs, testing and specialized tooling requirements.
Work with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring tier 2‑3 supply chain resiliency.
Ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC and federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes across different countries through appropriate levels of testing.
Validate design through prototype, pre‑production and first‑of‑kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
Work with field engineering and commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical products.
Ability to provide support for manufacturing activities for the new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographical locations.
Be a leader within the product development team as well as within internal and external teams that support the data center.
A Day in the Life
Your day will be a dynamic blend of creative problem‑solving and technical excellence. You'll engage in collaborative design sessions, prototype development, and cross‑functional communication, translating complex electrical engineering challenges into elegant, scalable solutions. Expect to move seamlessly between technical design work, supplier interactions, and strategic planning that shapes the future of data center electrical infrastructure.
Basic Qualifications
4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
4+ years of commissioning experience.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer License.
Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
Able to interpret electric code NEC, NFPA, UL891, UL508, UL1066, UL1558, ANSI C37, and other IEC codes.
