Purpose
Scientific and Clinical Experts (SEs/CEs) are individuals who are noted for their expertise in a therapeutic area and as a result have special needs for in-depth and cutting‑edge information. The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) program is specifically designed to meet these needs through a field‑based group of medical professionals with deep content knowledge about specific disease states, Lilly and competitive compounds and the landscape within the therapeutic areas they represent. MSLs recognize and communicate feedback and insights of strategic importance to inform Lilly’s research and commercialization strategy. By facilitating scientific exchange, MSLs help shape the future of healthcare by addressing important clinical and scientific questions.
Responsibilities
Scientific Knowledge
MSLs will engage in continuous learning to maintain the highest level of technical expertise within their therapeutic area. They establish themselves as reliable, trusted, unbiased sources of up‑to‑date medical and scientific information for their customers.
Customer Engagement
MSLs spend the majority of their time on customer‑facing activities, using emotional intelligence and strategic thinking to deliver a positive experience. They connect SEs/CEs with Lilly resources and facilitate collaborative research.
Territory Ownership
MSLs demonstrate strategic analysis and planning to maximize efficiency. They implement and evaluate a territory plan, prioritize activities, and hold accountability for results, ensuring compliant partnerships across field roles.
Strategic Vision and Leadership
MSLs synthesize and communicate actionable insights to Lilly medical and cross‑functional teams, exercise sound judgment, collaborate across functions, embrace change, and apply innovative resources.
Basic Requirements
Advanced degree in health sciences (e.g., PharmD, MD, PhD) with 2‑3 years of relevant clinical or therapeutic area experience or
Masters or bachelor’s degree in health sciences (e.g., BSN, RPh, PA, NP) with 5+ years clinical, research or industry experience in the therapeutic area.
Authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis; Lilly does not sponsor work authorization or visas.
Valid U.S. driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Additional Preferences
Cardiometabolic therapeutic area experience is strongly preferred.
Field‑based position requires ability to travel up to 80% and work up to 4‑6 weekends a year.
Live in close proximity to a transport hub (airport or train station).
Intellectual curiosity about the field of science/medicine for which they are responsible.
Learning agility to comprehend and communicate complex scientific content clearly.
Self‑directed and able to work solo in the field managing multiple priorities.
Advanced presentation and computer skills with expertise in literature identification.
Effective strategic and critical thinking to analyze information and assess impact.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to use field‑based electronic or other communication tools for all aspects of the job.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $151,500 – $244,200. Full‑time equivalent employees are also eligible for a company bonus, and Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program including 401(k), pension, medical, dental, vision, prescription drug benefits, flexible benefits, life insurance, leave of absence, and well‑being benefits such as employee assistance and fitness programs.
