Overview

The Atlanta VA Health Care System is recruiting for a Lead Medical Supply Technicians (Sterile Processing) in Patient Care Services.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
Citizenship
Citizenship of the United States
Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens
Experience
Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work
Education
One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position
Licensure or Certification
None
Grandfathering Provision
All MSTs that are employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title - series and grade held - that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation
For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard - but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it - provisions apply: (1) Employees grandfathered into the GS-622 occupational series as MSTs may be reassigned - promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level - or changed to lower grade within the occupation
(2) MSTs appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed - on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard
(3) MSTs converted to title 38 hybrid status and who subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at reentry
Foreign Education
To be creditable - education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs

English Language Proficiency
Lead Medical Supply Technicians (Sterile Processing) must be proficient in spoken and written English
Grade Determinations: GS-07
To meet the requirements for the GS-07 grade level Lead MST (Sterile Processing) applicant must possess at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level
KSAs: 1) Ability to instruct staff on correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments
2) Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations
3) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers
4) Knowledge of sterility principles to instruct staff on decontamination procedures
5) Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments
Duties

The selectee will be assigned to the Sterile Processing Service (decontamination - preparation - and sterile storage) within Patient Care Service (PCS).
The selectees will be responsible for the following: Medical Supply Technicians in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) receive contaminated critical and semi-critical reusable medical equipment (RME) in the decontamination area.
Disassembles RME and determines the correct cleaning method (e.g., ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washer-disinfectors, cart washer and chemical cleaning decontamination agents) as determined by manufacturer instructions.
Inspects, assembles, and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization (e.g., steam sterilization, low temperature gaseous sterilization, high-level disinfecting scope reprocessor).
Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all processes and equipment.
Employees are scheduled to tours of duty within and outside of administrative hours - not limited to weekends and on-call.
This position is integral to the safe use of reusable medical equipment as they are the first line of defense in protecting patients from hospital acquired infections.
The purpose of the work is to reprocess critical and semi-critical RME like surgical instruments and Endoscopes and operate sterilizers and Automated Endoscope Reprocessors.
This job has become more technically demanding and requires updating skills; the requirements to maintain skills are mandatory.
Also entails moderate administrative functions and data entry skills.
The work has significant effect on the accuracy and reliability of further treatment.
Lead MST is responsible for the overall technical management of the Endoscopes and complicated surgical instruments used in surgical services and other specialty care clinics.
Technical skills vary from simple cleaning of instruments to a high level of competency in the function and operation of endoscopic instruments.
The technician must be able to adapt quickly to unusual and emergent situations or special requests of physicians in operating rooms for safe completion of procedures.
In the performance of official duties, regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data must be protected under Privacy Act and applicable laws and policy.
A thorough knowledge of medical and surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology is required to select the right instrument sets, packs, and specialized instruments.
Work Schedule: 1530-2400; may be required to work weekends, holidays, overtime during the week, and rotating on call, with schedule changes to accommodate service needs.
