Summary
The Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position is located at the Garner VA Clinic in Garner, North Carolina. The clinic provides multi-specialty care—including Primary Care, Mental Health, and Urgent Care—to approximately 25,000 veterans in Wake County and surrounding counties in Eastern North Carolina.

Qualifications

Citizenship: United States citizen.

English proficiency: Required.

Experience: Six months of relevant experience demonstrating ability to perform job duties.

Education: One year above high school with at least six semester hours in health-care related courses (e.g., sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, OR and surgical technician).

Or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Grandfather provision and other VHA qualification details (see VA guidance).

GS-07 grade requirement: One year specialized experience equivalent to GS-06.

Specialized experience examples: Receiving, disassembling, cleaning, and sterilizing reusable medical equipment; operating ultrasonic, mechanical, and cart washers; using cleaning agents; inspecting and packing items; performing daily operational checks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Instruction on procedures, communication with staff, interpersonal relationships, sterility principles, leadership, prioritization, and scheduling.

Physical requirements: Work in decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply, and other areas that may be hot or cold.

Preferred: SPD Technician Certification; hospital experience in sterile processing and decontamination.

Duties

Provide sterilization, preparation, and supply support for reusable medical equipment.

Distribute and prioritize workload among staff following established workflow and job specializations.

Revise work schedules to accommodate changes in workload.

Assign work to staff based on experience and training needs.

Monitor and report status of work.

Ensure SOPs and Sterile Processing Service mandates are followed during workflow.

Review work in progress or conduct spot checks to ensure compliance with supervisors' instructions.

Assess quality and quantity of work by reviewing cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution processes.

Provide information to management on performance issues, assignment changes, and task completion.

Instruct employees on work-related policies and procedures.

Compensation and Benefits
Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-hour tours, 0700–1800. Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases. Paid time off: 37–50 days annually (13–26 days leave, 13 sick days, 11 federal holidays). Parental leave: Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment. Childcare subsidy: up to 25% of costs for eligible families.
