DELTA /NCSCaLE Business Operations employs an
Accountant I
to support complex, specialized accounting functions across multiple units, including the Office of Professional Development (OPD) and Customized Training and Development (CTD). Working closely with senior accounting staff, this role applies accounting principles to day‑to‑day fiscal activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance and supporting financial reporting, reconciliation, and budget support.
Key Responsibilities
Process and review financial transactions, including vouchers, requisitions, purchase orders, journal entries, travel reimbursements, and marketplace activity.
Audit and reconcile financial activity, including PCard transactions, cash/check receipts, and system‑generated reports.
Identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring accuracy and compliance with policies and accounting standards.
Prepare, reconcile, and analyze financial data; support cost determination and cost distribution activities.
Assist in maintaining and improving accounting systems and financial processes.
Generate reports and financial statements that require interpretation and analysis of accounting records.
Support budget monitoring and analysis for assigned units, including updating internal budgets and assisting with forecasting and year‑end planning.
Provide support for audits, program closeouts, and financial inquiries by ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
Contribute to the integrity of financial data through consistent application of internal controls and established procedures.
Additional responsibilities may include occasional duties that expand skill sets and deepen understanding of department operations.
Minimum Education and Experience
Required: post‑baccalaureate credentials and 1‑2 years of relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree with 2‑4 years of experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
Demonstrated experience applying accounting principles, including budgeting practices and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (e.g., Excel/Sheets, Word/Docs, Gmail), with the ability to manage and analyze data efficiently.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer‑service mindset and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information, with a commitment to accuracy and compliance with policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Background in higher‑education environments, including familiarity with NC State systems and processes.
Knowledge of North Carolina state and university fiscal policies and procedures.
Proficiency with PeopleSoft Financials or similar enterprise financial systems.
Exposure to reconciliation, audit support, and financial reporting processes.
Ability to identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency and accuracy.
