Navajo Preference Employment Act

Overview
The Medical Laboratory Technician – Medical Laboratory Scientist performs specimen processing, testing, and reporting of test results in compliance with regulatory requirements, policy and procedures, and the TCRHCC’s goal of providing quality patient care. The position is in the laboratory that provides sub‑specialties of service in a hospital setting, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, microbiology, and clinical microscopy.

Qualifications (Medical Laboratory Technician)

Education:

High school graduate or GED, and successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks and held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician). OR sixty (60) hours of courses in an institution accredited; of those 60 hours have completed either 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory or Clinical laboratory science courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses with the minimal inclusion of 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemical, biological, or medical technologic/laboratory science in any combination.

License/Certification:

Medical Laboratory Technician certification from a nationally recognized certification agency must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of hire. Certification must remain unexpired and in good standing for the duration of employment.

Experience:

Six (6) months documented bench experience in each specialty including blood bank, microbiology, chemistry and hematology.

Qualifications (Medical Laboratory Scientist)

Education:

Graduated with a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, and has completed either 48 semester hours of medical laboratory technology or clinical laboratory science courses OR 48 semester hours of coursework across various subjects that include:

Twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, which must include general chemistry and biochemistry or organic chemistry.

Twelve (12) semester hours of biology, which must include general biology and molecular biology, cell biology or genetics.

Twenty-four (24) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science or technology in any combination.

License/Certification:

Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist or Specialist certification from a nationally recognized certification agency must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of hire. Certification must remain unexpired and in good standing for the duration of employment.

Experience:

A minimum of one (1) year of approved clinical laboratory experience, must include clinical rotation through blood bank, microbiology, chemistry and hematology.

Physical
The position requires prolonged dexterous skill; handling of tools such as needles and precision laboratory instruments; frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending and reaching; occasional kneeling, climbing, crouching, twisting, driving; and lifting or pushing/pulling up to 34 pounds. The incumbent must have stamina for long periods of standing and for use of far vision, near vision, color vision, depth perception, hearing normal speech, and hearing overhead pages. The incumbent must use the telephone frequently.

Mental
Incumbent must have good analytical judgment, work under pressure, attention to detail, and follow instructions to perform correct tests. Must possess technical skills and ability to prioritize and coordinate a variety of issues while often interrupted. Needs to communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations, cope with high levels of stress, make decisions under high pressure, manage altercations, focus, handle flexibility, and work alone. Must adapt to shift work.

Environmental
The job involves prolonged exposure to infectious diseases, chemical agents, dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature and humidity, hazardous or moving equipment, and loud noises. Must don and doff PPE as needed to complete tasks.

The Medical Laboratory Technician – Medical Laboratory Scientist plays a vital role in the treatment and prevention of disease by providing supporting evidence for provider diagnosis.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:

(Medical Laboratory Technician)

Follow laboratory policies, processes and procedures for specimen collection, handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records.

Perform and document corrective actions when test systems are not within acceptable levels.

Adhere to Quality Assurance policies; perform and document QC activities, instrument/calibration procedures, and instrument preventive maintenance.

Perform proficiency testing and document attestation that samples are tested according to protocol.

Maintain skills and knowledge for instrument use, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration related to each test performed.

Stay abreast of factors that influence test results and the skills needed to verify validity of patient test results.

Maintain inventory control to ensure adequate supplies and reagents.

Participate in laboratory training for non‑laboratory personnel or new hires; actively participate in Laboratory Accreditation maintenance.

Participate in Continuing Education by attending meetings and in‑services.

Develop and maintain relationships with Medical and Nursing staff regarding specimen processing and result interpretation.

Provide superior customer service, dedication, positive attitude, confidence, reliability, and eagerness to provide safe patient care.

Participate in departmental workflow and testing teams related to electronic health records or other initiatives.

Provide continuous communication with colleagues between shifts and laboratory leadership.

Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service.

Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times; complete donning and doffing tasks safely; discard used PPE appropriately.

Complete task training for cleaning and decontamination of surfaces contaminated by communicable disease.

Perform other assigned duties by the Director of Laboratory Services.

Provide guidance and support to colleagues (MLSA, MLT, Phlebotomists) in effective delivery of laboratory services.
