Mechanical Project Manager – Data Center Construction (Ground-Up)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Mechanical Project Manager
to lead the mechanical scope of large-scale, ground-up data center construction projects in the South Chicago region. This role focuses on delivering complex
HVAC, cooling, and mechanical infrastructure systems
critical to mission-critical environments.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in mechanical systems for data centers, including chilled water, CRAH/CRAC units, and cooling plants, along with strong experience managing subcontractors and coordinating with broader construction teams.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in North America; visa sponsorship is not available.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Scope Leadership
Lead all aspects of mechanical construction from early site development through commissioning and turnover
Oversee installation of HVAC and cooling systems, including
chilled water systems, CRAH/CRAC units, cooling towers, pumps, and piping networks
Ensure mechanical systems are delivered in line with design, specifications, and project schedule
Support coordination between mechanical, structural, and electrical teams
Mission-Critical Mechanical Systems
Manage delivery of
high-performance cooling infrastructure
to meet data center uptime and redundancy requirements
Ensure proper installation, sequencing, and integration of mechanical systems within mission-critical environments
Oversee pressure testing, flushing, commissioning, and startup of all mechanical systems
Support integrated systems testing and readiness for client handover
Subcontractor & Site Management
Direct and manage mechanical subcontractors, vendors, and field teams
Conduct regular site walks to verify installation quality, safety compliance, and progress
Ensure subcontractors meet project milestones, manpower plans, and quality standards
Resolve field issues and coordinate solutions across disciplines
Project Controls & Coordination
Track mechanical scope budget, procurement, and schedule
Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and equipment lead times
Identify risks related to mechanical systems and implement mitigation strategies
Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and other trades
Client & Stakeholder Communication
Provide updates on mechanical progress, risks, and milestones
Support coordination with design teams, engineers, and client representatives
Participate in project meetings, reporting, and technical discussions
Qualifications
5–10+ years of experience in
mechanical project management
within construction
Strong experience delivering
mechanical systems on data center or mission-critical projects
Deep understanding of HVAC systems, chilled water plants, and cooling infrastructure
Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating across multiple trades
Familiarity with commissioning processes for mechanical systems
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on
hyperscale or multi-phase data center projects
Proficiency in tools such as
Procore, Bluebeam, MS Project
Background with mechanical contractors or as part of a GC delivering MEP-heavy projects
