This is a 32-bed General Practice Unit that provides care for adult patients with stable, low-acuity medical needs that do not require intensive monitoring. The unit focuses on assessment, treatment, and recovery for a variety of general medical conditions such as infectious disease work up and treatment, COPD, GI bleeds, Peritonitis, chemo side effects, Pneumonia, etc.

Staff work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to deliver safe, patient-centered care, emphasizing strong communication, clinical judgment, and patient education. This unit is ideal for nurses seeking to build broad medical experience while working in a structured, team-oriented setting.

GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director / Nurse Manager, the Assistant Clinical Manager assumes both a clinical and managerial role. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the provision of patient care services within the department. The Assistant Clinical Manager assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of budgets, quality improvement programs, staffing levels, goals, objectives, regulatory compliance, and policies within the department. The assistant also assists in evaluating and disciplining personnel.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborate with Director/Nurse Manager to plan and implement management strategies, goals and objectives appropriate to the unit’s operations.

Provide unit leadership on the off-shift for at least 75% of time worked.

Coordinate staffing assignments; delegate work based on acuity, caregiver skill, and competency.

Collect data and monitor patient charts for appropriate documentation and follow-through of orders; evaluate delivery of patient care to ensure alignment with hospital policy and regulatory standards.

Provide timely communication to staff.

Serve as a clinical resource and mentor.

Regularly perform the work of a staff nurse per budgeted expectations and based on unit needs.

Assist in supervising the in-service education program and evaluate effectiveness, working with Nurse Educator/Unit Educator/CNS as needed.

Maintain working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence with ethical and professional standards.

Inform Director/Nurse Manager of nursing activities, needs, problems, and unusual events.

Assist in review and evaluation of unit personnel.

Take 24‑hour responsibility for the administrative management of designated patient care area in collaboration with nurse manager.

Make recommendations to Director/Nurse Manager regarding hiring, promotion, and discipline of nursing staff.

Promote HFHS Quality Initiatives and Service Excellence Initiatives; establish effective working relationships with other departments.

Conduct shift huddles.

Maintain frequent communication with Director/Nurse Manager about information pertinent to patient care; discuss patient plans and resolve complaints; communicate with physicians, patients, families, vendors, and community groups as appropriate.

Make routine nursing rounds/audits on personnel, timecards, equipment, materials, and supplies.

Ensure environment of care, including infection control and emergency preparedness.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Two years of RN experience.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSURES

Current RN license in the State of Michigan.

ACLS certified.

Certifications appropriate for the specific unit.
