Position Overview

Our client, a well-established Madison-based CPA firm, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join their growing team. This opportunity is ideal for an accomplished accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working directly with business clients, and brings a strong blend of technical accounting expertise and leadership capability.
The Assistant Controller will play a key role in managing financial reporting, overseeing month-end close processes, improving internal controls, and supporting multiple client engagements across diverse industries. Candidates with prior public accounting experience are highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities

Assist in overseeing daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activity
Manage and review monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management initiatives
Reconcile complex balance sheet accounts and investigate variances
Develop, implement, and enhance accounting processes and internal controls
Coordinate with external auditors, tax teams, and client stakeholders
Mentor and support junior accounting staff
Provide financial insights and recommendations to leadership and clients
Lead or assist with special projects, system implementations, and process improvements
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA designation preferred but not required
5+ years of progressive accounting experience
Prior public accounting experience is a significant advantage
Experience in a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, or Assistant Controller capacity preferred
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
Hands-on experience with QuickBooks and NetSuite strongly preferred
Advanced Excel skills and strong comfort with accounting systems
Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients and leadership teams
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive
