Summary
Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patients and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance functions at the patient care unit desk area.
Responsibilities
Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations, procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies during emergencies.
In the psychiatric setting, aid patients in reality orientation, participate in behavior modification plans/therapy, provide informal support therapy to patients/families, de‑escalate potentially aggressive patients, manage aggressive/out‑of‑control patients physically, facilitate age‑appropriate play for children, and monitor therapeutic milieu activities to ensure emotional and safety needs are met.
Observe, collect, and document patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.
Provide assistance to patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
Provide care and treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital sign measurement, height/weight, specimen collection, skin preps, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range‑of‑motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive patient and family interactions.
Provide direct personal care to patients for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding and ambulation assistance.
Provide indirect care to patients and the assigned area, including cleaning the work area, changing linens, restocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, assisting new employees and students, and routine clerical functions.
Reinforce routine teaching given by the registered nurse or physician, document patient understanding, and distribute patient education materials at the request of patients and/or healthcare providers.
Qualifications and Certifications
Completion of an approved Nurse Assistant I course approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Current listing with the NC Division of Health & Human Service Regulation Health Care Personnel.
Current NC Driver's License and meets insurance requirements to drive hospital‑owned vehicles.
Current BCLS certification.
CPI certification required within 90 days of starting on the unit.
