Overview
This supervisory position is responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates on an assigned shift in a State Correctional Facility.
Work Schedule
40‑hour work week with rotating days off.
Job Functions
20%
Supervises subordinate officers, ensures all duties comply with policies and procedures, plans and assigns officer duties, conducts inspections, and completes daily inspection reports.
20%
Oversees daily schedules and facility operations—security, food service, plant maintenance, medical service, recreational activities—planning inmate movements and maintaining transport records.
20%
Conducts daily tours of inmate housing units, performs inmate counts, monitors surveillance, reports behavioral changes, participates in inmate counseling, and maintains activity reports.
10%
Processes inmate transports, new inmate commitments, and supervises visitor searches, vehicle inspections, and contraband prevention.
10%
Investigates violations, issues disciplinary action up to written reprimand, participates in pre‑disciplinary conferences, and presents grievances.
5%
Acts as a member of the support team and participates in crisis intervention and prevention.
Attends monthly Commissioned Officers Meetings and performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates and/or reentrants.
Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary.
Supervise, evaluate, and direct the work of subordinate officers.
Perform physically demanding tasks such as running, physical control, and operating equipment.
Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp.
Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels.
Spend prolonged periods standing or walking, indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Work all shifts and posts (except those requiring a PA driver’s license).
Operate basic office equipment.
Maintain an active PA non‑commercial Class C driver’s license.
Work overtime with little or no advance notice.
Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Use and maintain various equipment and tools of the corrections profession.
Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform.
Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Hear and identify sounds relevant to security.
Visually observe inmate activities.
Administer emergency medical assistance.
Provide in‑service and on‑the‑job training.
Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing.
Maintain weapons qualifications per DOC Policy 5.1.1, Section 7.
Travel as required.
Responsibilities
Make routine decisions and exercise independent judgment in performing daily tasks. Hold authority and responsibility for institutional or facility operations in the absence of higher‑level officers and provide regular conferences for supervision, support, and direction.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Open to current Department of Corrections employees only.
Minimum experience: One year as a Corrections Officer 2 or four years in corrections security at a Pennsylvania state or county facility.
Active Pennsylvania non‑commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.
Pass a background investigation and meet CJIS compliance requirements.
Eligible for promotion without examination if previously held regular civil service status in Corrections Officer 2, Corrections Officer 1, or Parole Supervisor.
