
Nursing Station Clerk/NSC Trainee Neurocritical Care Unit Full-Time Evening Shif

Position Summary
Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. The team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations; answers telephones; performs data entry activities; maintains daily and clinical logs; prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files; fills out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions; mails patient letters; and delivers supplies and records to an assigned unit. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), which may allow non‑competitive appointment while fulfilling all required qualifications.
Duties
Orient patients and/or families to the unit, providing general information about the room, unit and hospital and serving as a contact person.
Give information on patient conditions within existing policies and direct visitors to appropriate locations.
Process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions.
Receive new admissions.
Prepare and maintain patient charts, daily log and clinic log.
Qualifications
Must be on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk 1; or, if not eligible, be able to be placed on a provisional appointment if no eligible list exists.
At least one year of full‑time clerical or patient‑care experience in a health‑care setting (required for provisional candidates).
Must be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment if a provisional appointment is used.
Must possess a current 55 b/c eligibility letter if applying under that designation.
Must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title approved for transfer to Nursing Station Clerk 1 (required for transfer candidates).
Other Requirements and Benefits
Must successfully complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services.
Must complete an electronic reference check with at least three professional references.
Must successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen and meet all regulatory pre‑employment screening requirements.
Must provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Position may require wearing respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair.
The position may be designated as “essential,” with obligations to remain on site during institutional emergencies.
