Responsibilities

Perform case management and concurrent planning in the Child Welfare area of Adoptions in accordance with DSS Policy, Mission, and GPS Practice Model.

Make contact with children and families to achieve the permanency goal of adoption; utilize critical thinking skills to monitor safety, risk, and well‑being.

Perform on‑call duties as assigned.

Manage case planning, contacts, visitation, and referrals for a caseload of legally free children and families to ensure safety, permanency, and well‑being.

Coordinate the selection of adoptive individuals or families and prepare children and applicants for placement.

Complete, review, and update the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) according to DSS policy time frames; use CANS to collaboratively update the Family Permanency Plan during Child and Family Team (CFT) meetings.

Engage families, other professionals within the agency, and external partners (e.g., GAL, Foster Care Review Board, DJJ) with empathy and respect; respond in a timely manner to telephone calls, emails, and texts.

Participate in and facilitate child and family team meetings.

Collaborate closely with legal, adhere to court orders, submit court packets on time, and participate in legal proceedings.

Maintain physical and electronic case records by composing clear, objective, and thorough documentation covering pertinent details; ensure all case‑management activities are documented in CAPSS per policy time frames.

Maintain child welfare certification and complete 20 hours of yearly training, including required certifications.

Pursue self‑care and support to minimize secondary trauma; apply trauma principles to support families.

Ensure personal identifying information (PII) is used, accessed, gathered, shared, and disposed of properly; protect agency networks and data.

Perform Red Cross shelter duty or other emergency shelter duties/services as directed.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a related discipline.

If holding a Bachelor’s degree in another field, one (1) year of related experience is required.

Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle for field‑work assignments.

Salary Information
New child welfare case managers earn a starting salary of at least $45,721 during initial certification, with supplements based on degree type and level. Subsequent salary increases and progression to higher pay brackets are based on training completion, competency attainment, and continuous service. Annual increases of up to 0.5% per year may also apply.
