Lead Phlebotomist

Job Summary
The Lead Phlebotomist provides oversight assistance to the pre-analytical staff in the Specimen Accessioning and Report Center (SARC) section and the Hospital-Based Clinics of the UCDH Clinical Pathology Laboratory. Lead Phlebotomists adhere to all departmental and governing organizations polices and guidelines and ensure effective and efficient operations of the section's pre-analytical performance. This position also oversees staff training and competency, investigates problems and recommends solutions that provide efficient specimen handling.

Minimum Qualifications

Certified Phlebotomist Technician

Must possess a current and valid State of California, Certified Phlebotomy Technician I License.

Must have current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross or UC Davis Health CPR or obtain within 3 months from hire date.

Experience performing adult, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and neonatal phlebotomy services (venipuncture & capillary heel sticks) in a timely manner all while following established procedures for both an inpatient and outpatient setting.

Must be able to perform and maintain competency in all areas of the pre-analytical lab to include outpatient phlebotomy, inpatient phlebotomy, data entry, inpatient and emergency department pneumatic tube stations, processing, batching, receiving and line operation.

Manual dexterity for pipetting and/or aliquoting specimens and operating pneumatic tube system.

Possess knowledge of laboratory pre-analytical processes, policies and procedures.

Possess effective written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of safety policies and procedures, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Knowledge of hospital and Laboratory Information System (LIS), EMR, hospital Incident Report System (RL Solutions), email, Internet, Microsoft Office and data management software.

Possess excellent interpersonal and team management skills to effectively collaborate with supervisors, physicians, technologists, nursing and other staff.

Possess excellent problem-solving skills and utilizes resources effectively for resolution.

Ability to show fairness and respect and follow the Principles of Community.

Ability to work productively in a busy and complex environment, meet deadlines and remain flexible within a variety of changing demands.

Ability to manage several projects or tasks simultaneously and exercise appropriate judgment when setting priorities.

Possess knowledge of and applies the principles of Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Continuous Quality Improvement.

Ability to function and work effectively in a diverse work environment, identify and work through conflict to a positive resolution.

Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow and adhere to HIPAA regulations.

Ability to prioritize and complete work to meet required turnaround times and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's of Science Degree.

Trainer or Lead experience.

Work Environment
