Duties Description

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor 2, SG-17 or higher-level designee, the Park Worker 3 will assist with road maintenance, concrete installation, and application of asphalt emulsions for the Regional Maintenance Roads Crew located at Bear Mountain State Park. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

Drive large trucks and haul material loads.

Operate and perform preventative and basic maintenance of heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, loaders, skid steers, rollers, graders, tractors, etc.

Operate and maintain various tools.

Perform manual tasks such as raking, lifting, and shoveling.

Clean, repair and replace culverts, drainage structures, and ditches to maintain stormwater flow capacity.

Mow and brush back roadway corridors, bridges, and culverts.

Plow snow using large trucks with wing plows; move snowbanks with heavy equipment.

Perform repairs or reconstruction of both paved and gravel roads.

Back up or repair road shoulders after paving projects or storm events.

Set up highway work zones and control traffic.

Perform proper tree care operations including tree removal and pruning, from aerial lifts and the ground.

May assist tradespeople with semi-skilled tasks after thorough instructions are provided.

Assist in emergency response functions as assigned.

Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Qualifications

One year of experience* in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility.

One year of experience* in any of the following fields: Law enforcement or security; Firefighting; Emergency Medical Services; Environmental education or stewardship; Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation); Historic preservation or interpretation; Landscaping or grounds maintenance.

One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces.

Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university.

Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program.

Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

If verifiable, we will accept and pro-rate part-time and volunteer experience.

Reassignment Qualifications

Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent‑permanent qualifying service as a Park Worker 3.

Additional Comments

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.

Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.

Must possess or obtain a valid Class B** CDL license that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.

May be required to work weekends, holidays and/or evening shifts.

Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation and Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre‑employment, random, and post‑accident drug and alcohol testing.

Additional Information
The CSEA contracts allow for salary protection for seasonal / hourly employees who are appointed to permanent graded positions with lower hiring rates under certain circumstances. We encourage OPRHP seasonal / hourly applicants to check in with your Regional Business Office Administrator to inquire about the potential impact on your salary. As a permanent graded employee, you will be eligible for regular salary / performance advances (i.e., salary increases).
