Essential Responsibilities/Tasks
Acquire projects for audiobooks, evaluating frontlist and backlist titles with a focus on independent, self‑published, and hybrid authors. Audio will be the primary format, but print potential will be considered during acquisition and throughout the project lifecycle.
Identify and engage a wide range of independent authors and creators, as well as select small presses, to pursue publication opportunities; work with agents who represent independent/hybrid authors.
Negotiate multi‑faceted publishing deals that include rights acquisition, content development guidelines, delivery schedules, and other production commitments, occasionally across multiple formats.
Coordinate and collaborate with production departments to shepherd projects from acquisition to publication.
Maintain relationships and collaborate with other divisions of Simon & Schuster to explore joint publications across formats and imprints.
Manage title acquisition P&Ls that capture the financial complexity of publications across multiple formats.
Coordinate with sales and marketing teams to explore all sales and promotional opportunities for titles.
Manage a rapidly expanding list of audiobooks and print titles in varied stages of development across diverse editorial categories and production formats.
Required Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in book publishing in editorial or acquisitions roles, with a strong track record of acquisitions. Audio publishing experience is not mandatory, though familiarity and enjoyment of audiobooks and their platforms is a plus.
Working knowledge of the independent, hybrid, and/or non‑traditional author space and the platforms authors use to sell and promote their books.
A solid network of publishing industry contacts.
Self‑starter ability and willingness to make primary contact on potential projects.
Experience acquiring in commercial fiction—including romance/romantasy, fantasy, horror, historical, book‑club fiction, mystery, and suspense—as well as nonfiction in true crime, health, wellness, spirituality, bio/memoir, and more. Above all, an interest in compelling books often published outside the traditional space that readers will love.
Exceptional initiative, curiosity, and autonomy from day one.
Ability to adapt to ever‑changing production necessities and schedules across multiple formats.
Experience in content acquisition and evaluation.
Strong editorial and project management skills.
Experience creating and managing P&Ls to incorporate changing input and financial goals across multiple formats.
Ability to cultivate an editorial perspective that assesses and speaks to the current cultural moment, and anticipates the next.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job‑related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
