Position Highlights

Office/On‑Site.

Part Time, 34 hours per week.

First Shift, Monday – Friday.

Location: 60 State Street, Wethersfield, CT.

Training Schedule: Monday 9:00 AM–1:30 PM, Tuesday–Thursday 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, Friday 9:00 AM–4:30 PM.

Work Schedule: Monday 12:00 PM–4:30 PM, Tuesday–Thursday 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, Friday 9:00 AM–4:30 PM.

The Role
The Customer Contact Center is a fast‑paced, high‑volume call center that answers inbound calls and processes customer emails across all aspects of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Examiner provides clear, complete, and accurate information referencing agency statutes, regulations, and procedures.

The Motor Vehicle Examiner Can Expect To

Handle inquiries via incoming calls, emails, and letters about obtaining new registrations or licenses and scheduling appointments.

Research and resolve issues related to vehicle registrations, titles, and licenses.

Communicate clearly with others and explain agency statutes, regulations, and procedures to a wide range of audiences.

Examples of Duties

Review and examine applications and supporting documents for operator licenses, vehicle registrations, and certificates of title to ensure clear, complete, and accurate information.

Perform limited restorations of driver licenses or motor vehicle registrations.

Verify data such as insurance coverage, vehicle identification number, property tax liability, and suspension records.

Determine proof of ownership and existence of encumbrances from submitted information.

Contact municipal collectors of revenue to obtain clearance.

Prepare appropriate form letters advising of specific reasons for rejection or requesting additional information regarding correction of submitted data.

Compare data elements with automotive reference manuals and manufacturer’s publications for verification.

Check for erasures or omissions in typing.

Respond to inquiries from the public and co‑workers and provide correct information on requirements and procedures.

Issue motor vehicle operator licenses containing the applicant’s photograph.

Collect fees.

Verify and validate applications and supporting documentation.

Operate camera, die cuts, and laminates photographs to licenses.

Make minor adjustments to and perform routine maintenance on equipment.

Operate cash register and other office equipment such as calculators and computer terminals.

Schedule appointments.

Prepare financial documents and reports.

Balance cash and documents.

Process registration renewals.

Examine title applications, ensure completion and may process disposition requests submitted by garage owners.

Receive training in and may perform on a limited basis full‑scale registration activities such as issuance of motor vehicle and boat registrations, toll plates, collection of title fees and sales tax, verification of proof of ownership and determination of appropriate registration transaction, etc.

May maintain records including approved and rejected applications.

May perform specific research assignments such as chain of ownership or lien information.

May clear duplicate identification lists.

May type.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
Three (3) years of clerical experience.

Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
One (1) year of the General Experience must have included clerical experience where the majority of the time involved face‑to‑face contact with the general public, providing personal explanation or interpretation of products, policies or procedures, or telephone customer service where the primary responsibility included providing information concerning, or explaining, programs/services or resolving problems.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
College training may be substituted for General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one‑half (½) year of experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience responding to internal stakeholders’ and customers’ inquiries by phone and email, providing information and resolving issues in a Call Center environment.

Experience prioritizing multiple assignments, coordinating with team members, and meeting all required deadlines.

Experience processing customer inquiries by identifying needs, providing information, and routing issues to the appropriate department.

Experience de‑escalating customer concerns by using active listening and solution‑focused communication to resolve issues.
