Work Schedule: M-F 7am–12pm

$21.59–$27.17 per hour | 25 hours per week

About the Position and Team
The City of Gilroy is hiring a part‑time, temporary Maintenance Worker Assistant for the Public Works – Streets, Storm, and Trees section. This entry‑level role is temporary for approximately three months and may be extended depending on department needs. This role provides hands‑on experience in maintaining public spaces, including trash and debris removal, weed abatement, pressure washing, and general area cleanup.

Maintains a clean driving record and demonstrates a strong commitment to safe and responsible driving.

Is customer service oriented with the ability to communicate clearly with members of the public.

Is a team player with a can‑do attitude.

Is motivated by physical work and helping keep public spaces clean and well‑maintained.

Able to accurately document and track completed cleaning areas and tasks.

Is teachable and coachable with a sincere desire to learn.

Can perform or coordinate minor building maintenance tasks, including plumbing, carpentry, and painting.

Collaborates effectively with other city departments and the public to manage maintenance schedules and assigned responsibilities.

Job Duties

Perform routine trash and debris removal in assigned zones.

Dispose of garbage, litter, and debris as instructed.

Learn how to operate and provide daily maintenance on equipment, vehicles, and hand and power tools as assigned.

Assist in the preparation and maintenance of accurate records and reports.

Assist in investigating service requests and complaints.

Learn and conduct inspections as assigned.

Perform disaster relief work as required.

Qualifications

Minimum twelfth grade education or a GED.

Six months of construction, maintenance, or landscape experience or training is qualifying. Prior work for a public agency or other similar service industry desired, but not required.

Subject to recall on a scheduled and/or emergency basis. May be assigned to work varied shifts, holidays, or weekends to meet the needs of the City.

Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).

Employee encouraged to obtain a Class A Driver License. If obtained, must participate in Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing program, including random testing.

Pass a post‑offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.

Pass a Department of Justice criminal record check for employment.

Prefer non‑tobacco user.
