SUMMARY:
Perform skilled and semi-skilled generalist work in the maintenance of City streets, parks, trees, irrigation systems and buildings.
Examples of Duties
EXAMPLES OF REGULAR DUTIES:
Perform, independently and as part of crew, semi-skilled general maintenance of buildings, grounds and streets. Perform grounds keeping. Waters, prunes, trims, rakes, weeds. Participate in the maintenance & beautification of parks, curbing, parking & related areas. Prune trim top and remove of shrubs and trees. Participate in fertilizing, and insect control. Maintain City Streets. Patch roads. Remove trash, line pavement. Maintain parks including playground equipment and play areas. Operate safely power-driven equipment including trucks, loaders, sprayers etc. Assist specialist workers in repair projects requiring knowledge of electrical work, carpentry and plumbing. Follow prescribed maintenance schedules and methods of performance. Adhere to safe work practices. Assist in the operations of the Hawaiian Gardens beautification programs. Report citizen complaints to ensure appropriate disposition. Perform related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be High school equivalent. Two or more years' experience as custodian, general maintenance worker or groundskeeper. Valid State of California driver's license.
Knowledge of:
General maintenance. Basic knowledge of one of the skilled trades. Simple record keeping. Hand and power tools. Safe driving.
Ability to:
Operate a variety of public works equipment safely. Methods in street, grounds and building maintenance. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Follow written and oral instructions. Maintain effective working relationships with other people. Be available for stand by and emergency call outs.
