Overview

Join the Department of Transportation as a Transportation Construction Inspector and help ensure safe and reliable travel for local communities. This role provides the opportunity to build skills in the field while supporting public projects. You will work independently, solve problems, and see the direct results of your efforts on Pennsylvania roadways.
Description of Work

This position reviews, inspects, and documents work related to highway occupancy permits and construction within state right of way. Ensure safe, compliant, and well-coordinated work across permit activities. Duties include:
Field Inspections: Conduct inspections of permitted work to verify compliance with regulations and permit conditions
Plan Reviews: Evaluate permit applications, plans, and specifications for accuracy and adherence to Department standards
Customer Guidance: Explain regulations and requirements to applicants, property owners, and utility representatives
Permit Compliance: Identify violations, document findings, and prescribe corrective actions
Record Keeping: Maintain detailed inspection notes, reports, and permit documentation
Safety Verification: Check traffic control setups and field conditions to ensure public safety
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday with a 30-minute lunch
Telework opportunities may be available part-time after probation; location must be in Pennsylvania; telework is not guaranteed and can change
Position covers projects within Schuylkill and Berks counties

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection; OR
Three years of experience in quality control of materials or related construction industry, including reading blueprints or plans; OR
One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth or equivalent Federal title); OR
Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth or equivalent)
One year of construction inspection experience with an associate\'s degree in civil/related engineering field; OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training
Special Requirement: Active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver\'s License or equivalent
Other Requirements:
PA residency requirement
Ability to perform essential job functions
