
Excavator Operator (Matagorda and surrounding area)

Position Summary
This position is accountable for safely and efficiently operating excavators to dig, move, load, and grade earth, rock, gravel, or other materials on construction sites. Duties include trenching, backfilling, sloping, site preparation, and material handling. The operator will be responsible for ensuring proper operation and maintenance of the excavator and may assist with general labor as needed to complete construction projects. The incumbent must have the ability and flexibility to work different shifts and long hours (8‑12 hours). Weekend work and extra hours occur according to production needs and at the discretion of the Crew Supervisor. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of the Company, which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, with integrity as the foundation.
Specific Responsibilities
Operate excavators to dig trenches, foundations, and slopes according to blueprints, plans, and grade specifications.
Inspect equipment prior to operation, perform daily safety checks, and report malfunctions immediately.
Monitor gauges, dials, and other indicators to ensure equipment is working properly.
Perform basic maintenance such as fueling, lubricating, and cleaning equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
Ensure that trench depths, slopes, and alignments are within project tolerances.
Load and unload materials onto trucks, stockpiles, or designated areas.
Collaborate with other crew members to ensure efficient and safe job site operations.
Assist in other duties as assigned, including general labor or equipment support.
Maintain equipment and tools to ensure long lasting use.
Maintain confidentiality by not disclosing proprietary or trade secret information to others.
Employee Safety and Compliance
Responsible and accountable for incumbent’s own personal safety, the safety of all co‑workers, and any other incumbents encountered. Authorized and obligated to stop work whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or observed. Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies and procedures, and report all violations promptly. Perform additional duties as may be assigned, such as certification or safety training.
Position Requirements
Minimum of 7+ years of experience operating excavators in construction.
Knowledge of utility installation, trenching safety, and site grading strongly preferred.
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Be able to operate any sized small or medium excavator ranging from a 2‑ton mini to a 55‑ton excavator (CAT 352, John Deere 510 or equivalent).
Be able to load 25‑CY trucks with 5 scoops from a 5‑CY bucket in 2½ minutes consistently.
Be able to cut grade, slopes, swales, and carry grade from blue tops.
Perform daily machine inspection and complete it every day.
Be able to read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and site plans.
Possess strong awareness of underground utilities and excavation safety practices.
Be able to work in constant change in weather and site conditions.
Be able to perform required physical activities such as lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and bending.
Must be willing to work out of town as needed.
Physical/Mental Requirements
The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The incumbent must wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in areas where it is required, including hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel‑toed shoes, or other protective equipment.
The incumbent must identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate and executive, and remain calm during emergencies while responding appropriately as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency arise.
In addition, the incumbent must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
