General Responsibilities

Conduct research and summarize laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, transactional matters, opinions, pleadings, briefs, and other documentation.

Investigate the facts of cases to communicate all relevant information to an attorney.

Collect, compile, organize, and analyze various data for use in reports and documentation.

Prepare and present written legal analysis, reports, and recommendations to attorneys.

Assist in the preparation, revision, and execution of routine contracts and respond to counter proposals or related documentation and exhibits.

Respond to client inquiries and communications and perform document management.

Prepare correspondence and legal documents requiring thorough knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Evidence, legal format, terminology, and procedures.

Assist with liquor license applications and hearings.

Assist attorneys with state, federal, and administrative litigation matters, including calendaring, coordination, and preparation of pleadings, motions, affidavits, exhibits, discovery, and responses.

Attend arbitration, hearings, or court dates as needed.

Assemble and prepare documentation or exhibits based on materials developed during the investigatory or discovery stage, prepare witness and exhibit binders for deposition, trial, administrative hearings, mediation, or transactional closings.

Provide legal support for the Town Attorney’s office in drafting, proofreading, and editing legal documents, including contracts, memos, letters, reports, deeds, ordinances, resolutions, and presentations.

Prepare Town Council agenda materials including drafting of ordinances, resolutions, and related exhibits.

Provide general administrative office duties such as answering phone calls, calendaring, and responding to emails for the Town Attorney’s office; purchase supplies and arrange for maintenance of office equipment.

Assist the Town Attorney with office operations, including budget tracking, monitoring expenditures, processing invoices, maintaining the law library, and managing the Westlaw account.

Maintain and manage the Town Attorney’s calendar for appointments, travel, hearing dates, and due dates as needed.

Responsible for file and case management, including opening and tracking of all legal files, maintaining litigation and project files.

Maintain complex records, including master files, case files, and library maintenance in accordance with established systems.

Facilitate the legal review of Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) or Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA) requests and coordinate with departments to redact and organize responsive records using JustFOIA.

Participate in the preparation of the Town Attorney Office’s annual budget.

Prepare purchase orders and process invoices for payment within Town policies.

Perform cost control activities such as monitoring expenditures to assure sound fiscal control.

Assist in developing short- and long‑range goals and annual efforts to advance the Town’s mission, goals, and objectives.

Contribute to the preparation and review of departmental policies and procedures to maintain effectiveness.

Possess knowledge of legal terminology and forms used in municipal legal work.

Provide strong customer service and communication skills in verbal and written interactions with all levels of Town personnel and the general public.

Proofread copy and correct errors (typographical, grammatical, punctuation, informational) then distribute as needed.

Process, sort, and file mail, purchase orders, financial records, and other documents.

Manage workload to achieve departmental goals.

Ensure responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations, Town of Erie policies and procedures, and the Town of Erie Municipal Code.

Assist in recommending and implementing modifications to systems, policies, and procedures.

Identify and recommend changes or improvements in departmental operations for efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Success in this position requires familiarity with legal terminology, strong customer service skills for daily interactions with the public, employees, and the Town Mayor/Council, and the ability to work with limited supervision. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail‑oriented, and confident in performing both standard and advanced administrative duties.

Salary Ranges

Paralegal I:

Minimum $30.91/hour, Midpoint $35.70/hour, Maximum $40.49/hour

Paralegal II:

Minimum $33.23/hour, Midpoint $38.38/hour, Maximum $43.53/hour
