Civil Engineer

SThree, Richmond, VA, United States

Civil Engineer - Solar PV Plant & Substation Projects (U.S.) Role Overview
The Civil Engineer will support the design, development, and execution of utility‑scale Solar PV plants and high‑voltage substation/switchyard projects across the United States. This role focuses on civil and structural engineering deliverables, site development, foundations, grading, drainage, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare civil and structural design documents and construction drawings, including foundations, grading plans, drainage layouts, and site infrastructure.

Develop and update as‑built drawings and incorporate field mark‑ups with minimal supervision.

Support substation and switchyard civil design activities, including equipment layout reviews, quantity take‑offs, grading and drainage design, and foundation calculations.

Perform detailed engineering calculations and develop designs for foundations, steel structures, mounting systems, and buildings.

Conduct technical, cost‑optimization, and constructability reviews of design packages.

Apply construction‑phase design techniques and contribute to feasibility studies for solar PV plants and substations.

Ensure compliance with applicable codes, permits, and regulations, including environmental requirements, building permits, drainage standards, and site safety constraints.

Interpret geotechnical investigations and apply findings related to earthworks, site grading, slope stability, and stormwater management.

Specialize in civil and structural design for high‑voltage substations and transmission facilities, with exposure to solar PV plants, power plants, or industrial facilities.

Apply relevant engineering standards and codes, including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.

Assist with tendering activities, technical proposals, and contractor evaluations.

Manage design changes by identifying revisions, assessing impacts, and communicating updates to project stakeholders.

Utilize industry‑standard engineering and design software to perform complex and repetitive analyses efficiently.

Collaborate with lead engineers and project teams to establish design criteria, scope, and deliverable requirements.

Support development of site civil design concepts and basis‑of‑design documentation.

Perform due diligence for site selection and development, including preliminary zoning reviews and environmental constraints (wetlands, endangered species, cultural and historical resources, FAA analysis).

Review and validate subcontractor bids and support negotiations for civil and structural scopes related to substations, switchyards, and solar PV plant construction.
