This role supports a high-volume consumer genetics laboratory by processing patient specimens that help people learn about their ancestry and understand their genetic health risks. As a Specimen Processor, you will work in a laboratory environment to receive, prepare, and organize samples for testing, while maintaining accurate records and supporting quality assurance activities during a peak season project.

Responsibilities

Receive incoming patient specimens and verify that they meet required acceptance criteria.

Stage specimens for processing and testing according to established laboratory workflows.

Aliquot specimens into appropriate containers for downstream testing and analysis.

Perform quality control and quality assurance activities, including error detection and documentation.

Maintain accurate records and logs related to specimen handling, processing, and QC/QA checks.

Pull samples for rework, additional testing, or shipment to other laboratory locations or biobanks.

Label specimens and containers clearly and accurately to ensure proper identification and traceability.

Enter specimen and patient-related data into laboratory information systems with a high level of accuracy.

Support specimen collection and accessioning processes as needed.

Assist with inventory management of specimens and related laboratory supplies.

Prepare samples for shipment to another biobank in accordance with laboratory procedures.

Safely discard old or expired samples following laboratory safety and disposal protocols.

Collaborate with laboratory staff and lab assistants to ensure efficient sample preparation and workflow.

Follow all laboratory safety, compliance, and quality guidelines while performing daily tasks.

Essential Skills

Experience or training in specimen processing or laboratory support functions.

Ability to perform accurate data entry for specimen and patient information.

Familiarity with specimen labeling and accessioning procedures.

Basic understanding of laboratory workflows such as sample preparation and pipetting.

Strong attention to detail for error detection and quality assurance tasks.

Ability to maintain organized records and logs in a laboratory setting.

Comfort working with biological specimens in a lab environment.

Ability to follow written procedures and standard operating protocols consistently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field is preferred but not required.

Prior laboratory experience or exposure is beneficial and preferred over no lab experience.

Experience with specimen collection, inventory management, and sample preparation is helpful.

Previous work as a lab assistant, in laboratory accessioning, or in specimen processing is an advantage.

Ability to work effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced laboratory environment.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy.

Work Environment
This position is based in a laboratory setting focused on high-volume processing of patient specimens for consumer genetics testing. You will work primarily at the bench and computer, handling biological samples, preparing and labeling tubes, discarding old samples, and pulling specimens to be shipped to another biobank. The environment is process-driven and quality-focused, with established protocols for specimen handling, safety, and waste disposal. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, supporting consistent daytime scheduling in a professional lab environment.

Job Type & Location
Contract position based out of Gibsonville, NC.

Pay and Benefits
Pay: $18.50 - $18.50/hr.
