Position Overview
We are seeking a high-impact, hands‑on
Controller
to serve a fast-growing, multi‑entity DTC ecommerce brand. This is a "Right Hand" role to the CEO, blending technical accounting rigorship with strategic financial leadership.
The successful candidate will lead the transition from a manual, "catch‑up" accounting environment to a highly automated, data‑driven department. You will oversee all global accounting operations, manage complex multi‑jurisdictional tax compliance, and build the financial infrastructure necessary to support ~$40M–$50M in annual revenue.
Key Responsibilities
Close Management:
Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process across 5 domestic and 1 international entity, moving the organization toward a disciplined 7‑day "hard close" cycle.
Financial Statements:
Prepare and maintain GAAP‑compliant financial statements and reporting packages for executive decision‑making.
Strategic Analysis:
Partner with the CEO and Department Heads to provide insights on margin expansion, expense allocation, sales trends, and affiliate benchmarks.
Audit & Tax:
Serve as the primary liaison for external CPA firms; lead annual audits and oversee the preparation of tax documentation.
Operations & Systems Optimization
Automation & ERP:
Oversee the optimization of NetSuite. A top priority is implementing high‑level automation (API integrations with Shopify and merchant processors) to eliminate manual reconciliations.
Treasury & Merchant Processing:
Manage daily cash positioning, treasury systems, and merchant processing programs, ensuring efficient payment flow and issue resolution.
Internal Controls:
Identify weaknesses in current reporting and regulatory structures; design and implement robust internal controls and accounting policies.
Tax, Regulatory & Compliance
Sales Tax Management:
Transition sales tax filings from third‑party providers to in‑house management. Oversee nexus compliance across all US and Canadian jurisdictions.
Audit Defense:
Manage sales tax audit requests from various jurisdictions, proactively working to reduce historical tax liabilities.
Corporate Compliance:
Manage business license renewals and oversee HR‑adjacent financial responsibilities (Workers’ Comp audits, state unemployment details).
Inventory & Supply Chain
Cost Accounting:
Refine rudimentary inventory accounting into a sophisticated model tracking landed costs, obsolescence reserves, and physical‑to‑digital reconciliations for overseas manufactured goods.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (Accounting emphasis preferred).
Certification:
CPA
Experience:
7+ years of full‑cycle accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a Controller‑level seat.
Technical Proficiency:
ERP:
Advanced proficiency in
NetSuite
is nice to have.
Software:
Experience with following is ideal: Quickbooks, Gusto, Expensify, Bill.com, and Shopify.
Automation:
Experience implementing AI/Automation tools (e.g., BlackLine, Airbase, Rillet) is a significant plus.
Specialized Knowledge:
Deep understanding of GAAP, multi‑state/international sales tax (Avalara), and inventory lifecycle management.
