Phlebotomist

The Phlebotomist supports a busy laboratory environment by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and preparing samples, maintaining accurate records, and assisting with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. This role ensures safe, efficient, and courteous specimen collection while upholding strict quality, safety, and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.
Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity at all times.
Store specimen samples at the required temperature, place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow protocol-specific procedures for transport.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport.
Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport to the laboratory or reference facilities.
Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and handling.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety, infection control, and decontamination procedures.
Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe work area.
Update and verify patient information accurately in systems and on specimen labels.
Answer telephone calls professionally and read or relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in accordance with protocols.
Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and processing and make recommendations to improve workflow.
Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices to colleagues as needed.
Essential Skills

Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced laboratory or hospital setting.
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.
Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Experience collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.
Ability to collect a variety of specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established procedures.
Comfort and competence drawing blood from patients across all age groups, including pediatric patients.
Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes.
Ability to understand and accurately follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
High School Diploma or GED.
0–2 years of overall experience in a medical, laboratory, or related healthcare setting.
Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.
Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with patients in a professional and courteous manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced lab or hospital environment.
Familiarity with specimen processing workflows, including packaging and preparing samples for transport.
Ability to accurately update and maintain patient information in laboratory systems.
Comfort answering telephone inquiries and communicating laboratory information in a clear and professional manner.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Ability to contribute to workflow improvements and support training of team members on phlebotomy techniques and procedures.
Work Environment

This role operates in a fast‑paced laboratory or hospital setting that handles a high volume of patients and specimens. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage units such as refrigerators and freezers. Work involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, as well as collaboration with clinical and laboratory staff. The environment requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory guidelines, including OSHA and DEP standards. You can expect to spend much of the day on your feet, moving between collection areas, specimen processing spaces, and administrative workstations where basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, are used for documentation and communication. Professional, clean, and appropriate clinical attire is expected to support a safe and hygienic patient care environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilmington, DE.
Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
