Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Nurse Supervisor participates in the structuring and comprehensive planning and implementation of the Nursing Services Program that guides the delivery of a quality health care program. The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation as needed and assists in guiding patient teaching activities and ancillary personnel while maintaining high professional nursing standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
Receives and reviews daily outpatient and infirmary reports.
Oversees all infirmary and clinic nursing functions, acting as a consultant and resource to facilitate offender care.
Coordinates offender care requirements with other departments and ensures continuity of care with outside health care facilities.
Provides functional direction and guidance to nursing staff through on‑job training and ensures quality orientation for all newly hired staff.
Participates in planning, priority setting, and development of policies and procedures for health care activities in compliance with contractual requirements, the Jail, and national standards.
Coordinates and monitors orientation, in‑services and continuing education within Nursing Services, and conducts in‑service training classes for professional and/or paraprofessional patient‑care personnel.
Provides hands‑on patient care and/or accepts nursing assignments to ensure contracted care is delivered.
Coordinates the development, provision, and evaluation of patient care according to the standards of quality care.
Conducts recruitment and retention efforts for Nursing Services.
Assists with the evaluation of all nursing personnel and with administrative functions related to nursing staff.
Works with overtime and commodity budgets to remain within budget limits.
Notifies the Director of Nursing and/or Health Services Administrator of staffing variances related to contract requirements.
Ensures 100% compliance with contracted staffing hours and any additional staffing hours.
Complies with, assesses, and enforces Wexford Health/facility policies and procedures and ensures subordinate compliance.
Ensures the existence of an Infection Control Program, supervises its activities, and monitors ongoing compliance with company/facility policies and community standards.
Prepares and submits monthly reports as requested by the Health Services Administrator.
Conducts regular meetings with staff as required per company/facility policies to maintain optimal levels of communication within the Health Care Unit.
Acts as administrator on call for nursing emergencies or nursing staff needs.
Member of the Quality Assurance Committee and attends Medical Audit Committee meetings as requested.
Develops and maintains an appropriate staffing schedule to ensure adequate nursing coverage for all shifts, making schedule changes and granting special requests for time off when appropriate.
Ensures nursing practice is consistent with current standards and is responsible for the level of care provided to offenders in compliance with Jail administration policies.
Serves as liaison between Nursing Services, other health‑care providers and contract services such as lab and physical therapy, coordinating patient‑care services with other departments.
Provides guidance to nursing staff on patient‑care problems and delegates responsibility within scope of each employee’s abilities.
Remains visible and responsive to all medical disciplines.
Supports and participates in evaluations designed to improve work conditions and patient care; evaluates employee performance in accordance with policies and timelines.
Participates in community organizations as requested and maintains good relationships with them.
Keeps abreast of and follows through on incidents occurring during all shifts.
Counsels nursing personnel following established protocols.
Reviews discrepancies in sharps and tool counts, investigates, reconciles, and applies corrective action when indicated.
Reviews mediation errors, investigates, reconciles, and applies corrective action when indicated.
Engages in discharge planning and coordinates continuity of offender care with outside health‑care facilities.
Responds to offender medical grievances as requested.
Receives direction from site administrative personnel as appropriate and ensures contract terms of nursing coverage are met.
Coordinates special projects such as nurse audits, development of nursing policies and procedures, etc.
Job Requirements
LICENSURE:
Current, unrestricted Texas Registered Nurse License.
CERTIFICATION:
Current CPR Certification.
EDUCATION:
Graduate from an accredited nursing school; Associate's Degree required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 2–3 years of clinical experience; previous supervisory experience preferred; correctional nursing experience a plus.
