Early Childhood Development Practitioner
Position Summary:

Child development teachers will provide an educational classroom setting for young children (infancy through five years) and university students in a laboratory center designed to model best practices in the field of early childhood education. Using an emergent, negotiated curriculum, they teach individualized fundamental pre‑academic skills and lead activities to promote language development, cognitive and perceptual development, and gross motor development in children representing a cross‑section of backgrounds.

Responsibilities

Design and implement an emergent, negotiated curriculum utilizing best practices and innovative techniques.

Lead activities in language development, perception and reading development, pre‑academics, fine and gross motor skills, and social skill development.

Supervise and train university students conducting practicum experience; evaluate practicum student performance.

Coordinate and supervise shorter‑term lab experiences for university students from various disciplines.

Provide information about program techniques to visitors.

Participate in staff development opportunities, including state‑mandated workshops and in‑service trainings.

Document children’s learning in various ways and make this learning visible to parents, university students, and the children themselves.

Maintain a developmental portfolio on each child; schedule and conduct annual home visits.

Perform related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Experience working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

Thorough knowledge of growth and development of young children and ability to use this knowledge to plan and implement appropriate programs.

Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and educational techniques for teaching preschoolers 0 to 5 years.

Strong communication skills.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co‑workers, and faculty.

Ability to supervise university students doing practicum work in the program.

Personal philosophy that embraces constructive guidance, social constructivist methods, emergent curriculum, documentation of children’s experiences and learning, and community involvement.

Must obtain criminal background check clearance.

Must be trained in CPR and First Aid within first 2 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from a four‑year college or university with a major in early childhood education or early childhood special education with practicum/internship experience and related teacher certification (e.g., birth‑kindergarten certification), or graduation from a four‑year college or university with a degree in a related field and at least two years of experience teaching children birth to five in a professional setting. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Safety

Ability to oversee safety programs and standards; implement preventive and corrective actions.

Maintain safe and secure environments; scan environment for safety guideline compliance.

Childcare and Instruction

Provide basic physical care; apply knowledge of early childhood development to monitor and teach socialization and behavior skills.

Implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on children’s interests and needs; model appropriate behavior for children and lab students.

Communication

Provide effective feedback to researchers and medical professionals regarding developmental, physical, or emotional needs of children.

Convey information effectively in written form (newsletters, classroom materials, evaluative information).

Conduct home visits and lead community programs.

Write and articulate children’s interests and developmental level through documentation panels.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds; able to move comfortably between standing, sitting, and floor activities. Teachers must be physically fit and in good health. Reasonable accommodations available.
