Job Description
The Pharmacy Technician Sterile Compounding is responsible for assisting Pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non-sterile drug products.
Responsibilities
Sterile Compounding: Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and USP guidelines, prepares sterile drug products.
Prepares all types of pharmaceuticals: non-hazardous, controlled and non-controlled, with regards to sterile preparations.
Maintains accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
Follows established procedures for appropriate documentation in electronic health records or similar systems.
Maintains a clean and safe environment for drug manipulation.
Assists the Pharmacist in filling patient‑specific medication orders and prescriptions by pulling items and ensuring medication is ready for delivery.
Accurately documents work performed throughout the compounding and/or medication delivery process in various electronic and automated systems including EPIC, DoseEdge, and Omnicell.
Distributes compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) and non‑sterile drug products as specified by the Pharmacist to designated areas on patient floors.
Maintains and stores inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies within the pharmacy or other assigned areas under proper storage conditions and/or security.
Receives and scans incoming medication orders from wholesalers and the supply chain, handling paperwork for each order appropriately.
Rotates stock within storage areas to promote the use of first‑expiring medications and mitigate potential for drug shortages and patient harm.
Discards expired drugs in accordance with established department procedures.
Accurately documents pertinent information regarding medications throughout day‑to‑day operations, including physical count, expiration dating, and beyond‑use dating when applicable.
Keeps accurate inventory and communicates with the pharmacy purchasing team.
Assists with routine quality assurance activities in the clean room, including temperature and pressure monitoring.
Maintains the work area and equipment in the clean room, including restocking of medications, diluents, and supplies.
Cleans ISO‑classified and/or non‑classified spaces according to department procedures and USP standards.
Assists pharmacy manager(s) in organization of controlled substance records and investigations regarding controlled substances when required.
Accurately handles and executes required documentation of controlled substances according to federal and state regulations, and Connecticut Children’s standard operating procedures.
Maintains other pertinent operational records not listed as required by department, state, federal policies, and/or guidelines.
When working in the main pharmacy, assists customers by answering incoming calls and greeting customers at the pharmacy window.
Retrieves orders for pickup.
Non‑Sterile Compounding: Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and following established SOPs and USP guidelines, prepares non‑sterile drug products.
Prepares all types of pharmaceuticals: hazardous and non‑hazardous, controlled and non‑controlled, with regards to non‑sterile preparations only.
Maintains accurate records of products prepared according to established documentation guidelines.
Follows established procedures for appropriate documentation in electronic health records or similar.
Maintains a clean and safe environment for drug manipulation.
Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma, GED, or higher education that requires completion of high school.
Minimum 1 year experience as a Pharmacy Technician, including 6 months in non‑sterile compounding and 6 months in non‑hazardous sterile compounding.
Alternative: 6 months experience as a Non‑Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician with Connecticut Children’s, having successfully completed training in non‑hazardous sterile compounding.
Preferred Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a healthcare‑related field.
Required Licenses/Certifications: State of Connecticut Pharmacy Technician license; PTCB required within 6 months of start date.
Preferred Certification: Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician Certification (CSPT).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of governing policies (USP and other applicable regulations) of sterile and non‑sterile drug preparation.
Proficient understanding of Environmental Monitoring Procedures.
Solid understanding of technician responsibilities in electronic health records (EPIC).
Strong understanding of various electronic and automated systems to accurately document work performed throughout the compounding process and medication delivery.
Ability to use mathematical methods and functions required for pharmaceutical preparation.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Word and Excel.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with patients and patient support members.
Ability to prioritize work and adapt to new workflows and processes.
Team‑oriented and collaborative work style.
