The Community Development Department guides the planning, development, and preservation of the City of Beverly Hills. The department is composed of six divisions (Administration, Code Enforcement, Special Events and Filming, Building and Safety, Planning, and Rent Stabilization and Housing) and provides staff support to three commissions (Architectural and Design Review, Cultural Heritage, and Planning). Community Development reviews and processes all private development projects to ensure compliance with the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and Building Code, including planning entitlements, zoning and plan review, permits, and inspections. The department preserves the community’s character and high quality of life through code enforcement and historic preservation programs and administration of the Rent Stabilization Ordinance and the City’s housing program.
Who We’re Looking For
The City of Beverly Hills is seeking an experienced Building Inspector I/II for the Major Projects team within the Community Development Department. This role performs technical building inspection duties and guides large, complex, mixed-use projects through the development process from site preparation and demolition to final inspection. The preferred candidate will have working knowledge of federal, state, and local codes including building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing codes, and experience applying modern building materials, tools, and practices in mid-rise and high-rise construction for inspections of compliance with approved plans and adopted codes. Job-site experience with construction management, traffic control plans, utilities, and public right-of-way inspections is highly desirable. Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, integrity, organizational skills, and self-management are required.
Please note that this position requires the use of a personal vehicle and City established car insurance policy minimums to be met. Incumbents may be eligible to receive an auto allowance.

Distinguishing Characteristics
BUILDING INSPECTOR I
– Entry level. Typically has little or no directly related work experience and works under immediate supervision while learning tasks. Progresses to general supervision as procedures are learned.
BUILDING INSPECTOR II
– Journey level. Authorized to issue trade and minor permits. Receives only occasional instruction for new or unusual situations and is normally filled by advancement from the I level.
Salary and Benefits
There are two levels of Building Inspector. Compensation is based on training and experience at the time of appointment and is at the discretion of the hiring department.
Building Inspector I salary range: $7,440.12 - $9,216.90 per month
Building Inspector II salary range: $8,218.52 - $10,181.32 per month
This position is represented by the Municipal Employees Association and is covered by the negotiated terms and conditions of that Association’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). A copy is located at the Beverly Hills website.
Minimum Qualifications
Building Inspector I
Experience in one or more construction trades is desirable.
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade with college coursework in engineering technology, architecture, or construction management.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class C driver’s license by time of appointment.
Possession of a certificate from the International Code Council (ICC) in at least one inspection area (building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical) at the time of appointment or within one year of appointment.
Building Inspector II
Two years of responsible experience similar to Building Inspector I with the City of Beverly Hills.
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade with college coursework in engineering technology, architecture, or construction management.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
Possession of a certificate from the International Code Council (ICC) in at least two inspection areas (building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical) at the time of appointment or within one year of appointment.
