Plant Manager (Custodian)
Freedom Elementary is looking for a Plant Manager (Custodian) to perform necessary custodial activities as well as assist in overseeing the work of the night sweepers. Their focus will be to maintain the building and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition. We are looking for a positive individual who is motivated to keep the building and grounds in good order.
Candidates should have knowledge of:
Basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Proper lifting techniques.
Candidates should have the ability to:
Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
Learn appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Maintain tools and equipment signed in clean working order and provide proper security.
Perform minor non-technical repairs.
Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
Perform heavy physical labor.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Communicate effectively with others.
Inspect and assure the security of facilities.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Walk, bend, lift, push and stand for extended periods of time.
Position Details
Hours: 8 hours per day (plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch)
Contract Length: 261 days per year
Contract Adjustments: Contracted days will be prorated based on the start date
Employment Status: Full-time with benefits
Employment Type: 12-month employee on the classified pay schedule
Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
High school diploma or GED
Documentation:
Candidates must provide proof of educational requirements to HR upon recommendation for hire.
2025-2026 Pay Scale
Starting Pay (Step 0):
$17.13/hour
Experienced Pay (Step 10):
$20.85/hour
We value experience! Previous experience working with students, intervention systems, and small-group instruction is strongly desired.
New hires may bring up to 10 years of comparable, full-time, verified experience.
The hired applicant is responsible for submitting the BCPS Verification of Experience Form to prior employers for completion and return to HR.
Payroll Note: While this is an hourly position, the salary is distributed via a year-long contract over 10 months. You will receive 4 paychecks at the end of June.
Salary Formula: Hours per day Hourly rate = Daily rate > Daily rate Contracted days = Annual salary. > Annual salary Remaining pay periods = Gross biweekly pay
