Lifeguard Position
The City of Lodi is seeking Lifeguard applicants. This is a part-time, seasonal position. Under the guidance of the Aquatic Manager, Lifeguards are skillful swimmers who perform such work as needed to preserve the health and safety of patrons utilizing the municipal swimming pool by preventing and responding to emergencies.
The 2026 summer season starts in early June (due to training) and finishes in August.

Duties and Responsibilities
The statements included in the Position Description reflect, in general, the duties and responsibility of this position and are not to be interpreted as being all-inclusive. Under general supervision, a lifeguard is a skillful swimmer, who performs such work as needed to preserve the health and safety of patrons utilizing the municipal swimming pool by preventing and responding to emergencies. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
Carries out duties as listed in the current Lodi City Pool Lifeguard Manual.
Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility.
Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
Follows all safety procedures contained in the Lifeguard Manual and Blood Borne Pathogens Procedures.
Patrols the pool and warns swimmers if they are not following the rules and regulations.
Disciplines violators politely but firmly.
Aware of all water hazards that can take place at the swimming pools.
Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of service.
Experiences regular contact with other employees at the pool and with the public.
Reports to the supervisor when he/she finds scarcity of equipment required for a rescue of a victim.
Dresses in a manner befitting duties and responsibilities.
Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
Performs various maintenance duties and other assigned duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
Acceptable Experience & Qualifications
Must hold a current Lifeguarding Certificate, which includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid certification and must have completed the Blood Borne Pathogen training.
Ability to follow oral instructions to establish and maintain effective cooperative working relationships with other employees.
Ability to upgrade or recertify certifications.
Good public relations skills, leadership qualities, and quick decision-making skills.
Ability to remain calm in emergencies.
Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
Work permit if under 16 years of age.
Tools and Equipment
Identification as a lifeguard that consists of an orange tube, swim suit, sweat shirt, or jacket with bold word, "Lifeguard."
First aid and life-saving equipment.
First aid kit, phone, whistle, hand signals, and locks.
Water-testing equipment
Cleaning supplies

Essential Physical Job Requirements
Ability to swim and good presence of mind to work in emergencies.
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.
Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position and read/ prepare a written/typed documents and text materials.
Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to occasionally, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Selection procedures may include the administration of a written examination or actual performance testing, the pre-screening of applicants, formal interview, physical testing, background and credit checks, and information verification as appropriate.
