Custodian Position

The custodian's position is primarily to provide support at various college buildings as directed by the facilities operations building manager. The position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of facilities; the surrounding external adjacent area; performing minor maintenance; and snow removal from walkways. A major aspect besides cleaning of the facility is to ensure it is open and then secured at the end of day. Additionally, the individual must be cognizant of the fire alarm and security systems.
Essential functions include cleaning of hardwood surfaces, carpeting and upholstery, terrazzo and tile/linoleum floors, restrooms, stairwells, classrooms, offices, etc. The custodian is also responsible for ordering of supplies/cleaning products, replacement of fluorescent tubes and light bulbs, snow removal, opening and securing of facilities, unclogging of toilets/sinks, identification of chemicals and cleaning fluids for appropriate tasks, and must be able to work a flexible schedule based on building requirements. The position also requires the use of pallet jack, scissors lift, and driving a vehicle.
Job specifications include a minimum of a high school degree or GED diploma, training on the job available with limited to no commercial cleaning experience, and commercial cleaning experience in an educational environment preferred. Skills required include the ability to use a variety of carpet extractors, Taski dry foam swing scrubbers, operate all floor hand rotary and vibrating scrubbers, operate wet vacuums, use ladders, use carpet bonnet machines, use and have knowledge of all cleaning chemicals and dispensing systems, gas and electric power sprayers, all general use custodial equipment such as mops, buckets, brooms, dusters, etc., operate snow blowers, use salt spreaders, use man lifts and pallet jacks, do light electrical and plumbing work using pliers, use screwdrivers, plungers, etc., and be able to drive a vehicle. The custodian must maintain good attendance and be punctual when arriving to and leaving work, communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing via email, provide customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public, work independently, and adjust to a flexible and changing schedule.
Physical demands include the ability to lift 50 pounds, work indoors with or without heat and air conditioning, and have a good attendance record. Mental demands include the ability to adjust to a flexible and changing schedule and work with a variety of college staff personnel. Working conditions include compliance with any mandated health and safety requirements, working alone, working late at night into early morning, work indoors and outdoors, work with or without heat and air conditioning, and outside during all types of weather.
