Substitute School Security Officer

This position performs responsible, protective service work maintaining security at a school. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Job Functions:
Conducts surveillance of school buildings, grounds, and activities.
Patrols hallways, stairwells, restrooms, and parking areas throughout the school day.
Monitors the loading and unloading of buses.
Maintains security during lunch periods.
Provides security during sports events and other activities.
Assists during recess to ensure student safety.
Checks all windows, doors, and entrances of the building to make certain they are secured.
Prevents admittance of unauthorized persons to the premises.
Monitors all vehicles entering school grounds.
Monitors and works the security cameras to ensure they are properly recording at all times.
Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances.
Witnesses student and/or locker searches.
Assists with fire drills and emergency evacuations.
Escorts disruptive students to locations specified by school administration.
Helps to prevent or control physical confrontations, personal injury, and damage to school property.
Conducts sex offender searches on any adult requesting to chaperone school events.
Remains alert to danger and to provide needed assistance at all times.
Will be ready at any time to summon and coordinate with sworn police officers in an emergency.
Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or its equivalent.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
At least one year of related experience; experience working with school-aged children preferred.
Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
Must obtain initial certification through the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and maintain an active certification through required training by DCJS during period of employment with Chesapeake Public Schools.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of practices concerning the protection of school buildings and grounds.
Knowledge of search and seizure procedures in a school setting.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or emergency requiring immediate attention.
Ability to think and act quickly, effectively, and responsibly under emergency situations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, associates, students, and teachers.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
This is normally light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Work requires standing, climbing, walking, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, and observing general surroundings and activities. Any of the above physical requirements may be suddenly increased in the event of an emergency.
