Orange Media Network - Baro Sports Editor (Academic Year 2026-2027)
We are seeking a part‑time (maximum 24 hours per week) Sports Editor for the Orange Media Network at Oregon State University. The Sports Editor will produce student‑generated sports content for the print newspaper, website, and social media channels of The Daily Barometer and OMN Sports. The role involves coordinating coverage, curating multimedia, publishing, and fostering an engaging sports community.

Position Details

Appointment Type: Student Employee

Location: Orange Media Network, Oregon State University

Pay: Hourly $15.05–$21.50 (standard; non‑urban; Portland Metro) with 20 hours per week during onboarding totaling $1,344.

Work Schedule: 20 regular in‑office hours each week, at least half during business hours (8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday). Hours may vary over the term.

Employment Dates: Academic start September 8, 2026 – June 15, 2027.

Responsibilities

Coordinate sports coverage by pitching, assigning, covering and editing stories, and determining multimedia needs (photography, video, audio).

Support Baro sports page design and review pages prior to publication.

Arrange radio sports play‑by‑play broadcasts with station manager and assistant sports editor, selecting and scheduling games at least one month in advance.

Update social media platforms and the sports section of the website with fresh content.

Hold weekly cohort meetings with staff and adviser to review performance, plan activities, and provide guidance.

Ensure all articles are copyedited, ethically sound, and reflect multiple perspectives.

Secure proper credentials for game coverage and meet all deadlines.

Provide breaking coverage as needed (nights, weekends, academic breaks).

Attend weekly editor meetings and red‑mark meetings.

Build and maintain relationships with partners and stakeholders; grow audience engagement.

Align OMN program content with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies.

Act professionally at all times.

Qualifications

Knowledgeable in newsgathering, news values, and fact‑checking.

Willing to learn Associated Press Style (sports) and adhere to the SPJ Code of Ethics.

Flexible schedule: able to work nights, weekends, and academic breaks.

Organized, reliable, and strong writer/communicator comfortable with public speaking.

Experienced coach and comfortable giving/receiving feedback.

Professional and calm under difficult situations.

Skilled in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships.

Minimum 6 months paid OMN staff experience or 12 months volunteer OMN staff.

Complete all onboarding curriculum before beginning role.

Preferred Qualifications

Paid OMN staff member for at least 12 months.

Attendance and participation in OMN Fall training.

Leadership & Professionalism

Follow all OMN policies and procedures.

Ensure equitable representation and inclusion in designs and content.

Must be a current student enrolled in high school, community college, or university with the required credit load:

High school: enrolled in a high school or home‑schooling program.

Undergraduate/post‑baccalaureate: 6 credit hours per term.

Undergraduate international: 12 credit hours per term.

Graduate: 5 credit hours per term.

Graduate international: 9 credit hours per term.

Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; suspended students are ineligible.
