
Orange Media Network - Reporter 2026-2027

Position Summary Reporter (part‑time, maximum 24 hours per week) at the Orange Media Network (OMN) of Oregon State University (OSU) for the academic year 2026‑2027.
Full start: Sept. 8, 2026 through the academic year.
Pay: $57 for standard stories (400–600+ words, 3+ sources/perspectives).
Responsibilities Pitch, accept, and develop story ideas with news value for the OSU community.
Conduct research and interviews to produce full stories of at least 400 words.
Remain objective and provide fair, accurate coverage.
Participate in readouts with editors to revise style or content.
Pursue news in a timely fashion.
Suggest photo and/or video coverage to enhance online presentation.
Share stories on social media to reach audiences.
Cover breaking news as needed.
Attend all staff and team meetings as required by editor(s)-in‑chief.
Act as a mentor to new hires.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Eligibility & Qualifications Knowledgeable in news gathering and fact‑checking strategies, or willing to learn.
Willing to learn AP style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics.
Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and academic breaks.
Meet deadlines consistently.
Strong writing, communication, public speaking, and organizational skills.
Comfortable giving and receiving feedback.
Remain professional and calm when dealing with difficult situations.
Complete all onboarding curriculum components.
U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or authorized international students.
Currently enrolled in a high school, community college, or university; pursuing a program of study.
Maintain academic standing; students on suspension are ineligible.
Meet minimum enrollment standards: High school students: regularly enrolled or in a home‑schooling program.
Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate students: at least 6 credit hours per term.
Undergraduate international students: at least 12 credit hours per term*.
Graduate students admitted to Graduate School: at least 5 credit hours per term.
Graduate international students admitted to Graduate School: at least 9 credit hours per term*.
International students may carry fewer hours with approval from the Office of International Services (OIS) and presentation to the Student Employment Center.
Transferable Skill Development Through this role students develop communication, critical thinking, and professionalism—core competencies sought by employers under the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
