
Orange Media Network - Puzzler 2026-2027

Position Summary
This recruitment will fill a part‑time Puzzler (up to 24 hours per week) for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University. The role involves creating crossword, Sudoku and other puzzles for OMN print and online platforms.
Students in this role will develop skills in communication, critical thinking, and technology.
Responsibilities
Pitch puzzle theme ideas that have news values for the OSU community
Produce puzzles with clues that fairly represent the subject without resorting to stereotypes or caricatures
Submit edited puzzles for use online and in print by the assigned deadline
Make any required edits to puzzles for use online and in print
Attend staff meetings as required by the editor‑in‑chief
Grow audience engagement
Ensure content used for puzzles is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
Other duties as assigned by the adviser
Communication Requirements
Respond to emails, messages, team chats, and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
Use Basecamp for project management and respond accordingly
Notify adviser immediately if any ethical, legal, personnel, or controversial issue arises
Leadership Expectations
Follow all OMN policies and procedures
Act professionally at all times
Ensure designs and content focus on equitable representation and inclusion, considering historically underrepresented and marginalized communities
Be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
Maintain academic standing; students on academic suspension are not eligible
Meet minimal enrollment standards:
High school student: regularly enrolled in a high school or homeschooling program
Undergraduate/post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
Graduate student: 5 credit hours per term
Graduate international student: 9 credit hours per term*
Additional Hiring Requirements
Strong writing and communication skills, comfortable with public speaking
Organized and reliable
Comfortable giving and receiving feedback
Remain professional and calm in difficult situations

Compensation
Hourly wage ranges from $15.05 to $22.00 depending on location: $15.05–$21.50 (Standard), $14.05–$21.00 (Non-Urban), $16.30–$22.00 (Portland Metro). Position is paid hourly.
