The Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University seeks an

i-Team Civic Designer

in Montgomery, AL to support a new Montgomery Innovation Team. This role will deploy design-based innovation approaches to help city leaders tackle complex civic challenges through evidence-based research, ideation, prototyping, and testing. The designer will work closely with the Mayor, the City’s leadership team, and city departments to change the culture of government and improve services for residents.

Responsibilities

Guide i-team colleagues and collaborators through a rigorous innovation process, including research, synthesis, framework development, idea generation, prototyping, and testing.

Design, plan, and deliver qualitative "design" research.

Create research findings in formats such as slide decks, stories, videos, experiences, exhibits, and design artifacts like journey maps, service blueprints, and personas.

Employ user research best practices to create a seamless experience for city leaders and community stakeholders.

Develop templates, tools, and methods that government can use to improve service and program delivery.

Create visual frameworks—journey maps, service blueprints, ecosystem maps—to clarify complex challenges.

Engage deeply with local community organizations focused on air and water quality, economic opportunities, and clean energy.

Plan and execute co‑creation workshops with stakeholders to propose viable solutions.

Stay current with trends in civic design and public innovation, develop best‑practice materials, and collaborate with i‑teams in other cities.

Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, visuals, recommendations, and other work products for city leaders, community members, and partners.

Support the i‑team and city government colleagues in agile ways of working, using tools such as Slack, Figma, Miro, Google Workspace, and Asana.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Apply an intentional civic design process centered on research, ideation, and delivery with key stakeholders.

Deep knowledge of design‑based innovation methodologies and facilitation techniques.

Superior organizational skills and the ability to set priorities and respond quickly to changing priorities.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with peers and varied stakeholders.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to synthesize information and produce concise reports.

Excellent content creation and writing abilities.

Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.

Work cooperatively within a team as well as independently.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related discipline.

Five years of design experience (instructional, strategic, business, product) or related experience.

Additional education or experience may substitute for required education or experience as permitted by JHU equivalency guidelines.

Benefits
