IUSM OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS (IN-DCMM-IUINA). Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine is a national leader in medical research and education. The Assistant Director of External Communications serves as a key member of the communications leadership team, responsible for advancing and executing a comprehensive external communications strategy that elevates the institution's reputation, visibility, and impact. Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications, this role collaborates closely with internal partners across editorial, storytelling, social, video and digital teams to develop and deliver clear, consistent, and compelling messaging for priority audiences.

Responsibilities

Leads the creation and dispersal of high-quality content across multiple channels
Ensures alignment with institutional priorities and brand standards
Identifies opportunities to position the School of Medicine's research, clinical, and educational strengths
Supports media relations, message development, and strategic initiatives
Works across teams to integrate communications efforts and strengthen engagement with external stakeholders
General Responsibilities

Directs day-to-day operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department or large multi-faceted department
Trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, and supervises the work of a team of communications generalists and/or communications assistants
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and supervises processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives
Reviews drafts of communications and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department
Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications
Monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty regularly
May assist in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs
Monitors industry trends and best practices and makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or a related field
2 years in a relevant field
