Director of Communications

ImmigrationJobs, Washington, District of Columbia, United States

ABOUT THIS ROLE
We're hiring a Director of Communications to lead L4GG's communications department at a moment of significant organizational growth and urgency. This is a strategic leadership role for a seasoned communicator who brings deep expertise in digital strategy, brand architecture, and integrated marketing. We're looking for someone who is just as passionate about developing and mentoring their team as they are about building the systems, automations, and workflows that make a communications team thrive.

You will lead a department that includes a Senior Manager of Communications who owns brand voice and content production strategy; a Communications Manager focused on our Climate Change and Environmental Justice program; a Training & Events Manager focused on our myriad virtual events and training programs; and two planned hires you’ll be able to shape: a Digital Marketing & Analytics Manager who drives platform performance and analytics and a Content & Creative Specialist who produces high quality content. You'll also coordinate with an external PR consultant on earned media.

We are looking for someone who is not just current in their field but ahead of it — someone who actively builds with AI-powered tools, designs workflows that multiply team output, and treats automation as a core part of how great communications gets done. This isn't a role for someone who simply stays informed about emerging tools; it's a role for someone who reaches for them first, integrates them into how their team works, and raises the floor on what a lean team can produce. Ultimately, the tools we leverage and systems we build will help L4GG punch above its weight on platforms and in public conversation. Most importantly, this person will also help shape the final configuration of this team and the infrastructure it runs on.

This role is right for someone who finds genuine satisfaction in developing the people around them. Our communications team is talented and deeply committed; they need a leader who will invest in them, challenge them, and help them grow - all while building them the systems needed to make their impactful work easier to do.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Communications Strategy & Brand

Develop and own L4GG's overarching communications strategy, editorial calendar, and brand architecture across all programs and channels

Serve as the organization's senior brand authority — setting the strategic vision for how L4GG sounds, shows up, and is understood publicly.

Partner with the Senior Manager of Communications, who holds L4GG’s existing brand voice and institutional knowledge, to help lead brand authority efforts organization wide.

Lead brand refresh initiatives: messaging frameworks, visual standards, style guides, and template systems

Partner with the Executive Director and program leads on high-visibility campaigns, major public statements, crisis communications, and organizational positioning

Leverage AI and emerging communications tools to increase the team's speed, quality, and reach — and model that fluency for the team

Digital Strategy & Platform Performance

Set the strategic vision for L4GG's digital presence: website, email, SMS, social media, and paid channels

Supervise the Digital Marketing & Analytics Manager, ensuring performance data actively shapes content strategy across the team

Hold accountability for digital performance goals including email list growth, open and engagement rates, SMS engagement, and platform follower growth

Ensure the team is using data to make decisions — not just producing content and reporting on it after the fact

Stay current on platform changes, digital trends, and emerging tools; bring that knowledge to the team proactively

Content Leadership & Editorial Oversight

Supervise and mentor the Senior Manager of Communications, who owns brand voice and the content production pipeline, and the Communications Manager, CCEJ, who leads climate and environmental justice communications

Ensure copy-heavy content (email campaigns, blog posts, major organizational statements) reflects L4GG's editorial standards

Coordinate with L4GG's external PR consultant on earned media strategy; serve as internal point of contact for media inquiries, talking points, and crisis response

Team Leadership & Department Building

Lead and develop a department of 4–5 staff across communications, content, digital marketing, and events

Play a central role in hiring the Digital Marketing & Analytics Manager and Content Specialist

Set annual communications goals, KPIs, and department budget in partnership with the SVP

Build a collaborative, high-output team culture in a fully remote environment

Build out L4GG's AI and technology toolkit for communications — evaluate, adopt, and train the team on tools that increase quality and efficiency

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required

10+ years of progressive communications experience with meaningful depth in digital strategy, brand architecture, and integrated marketing

Demonstrated success leading or building communications teams in nonprofit, advocacy, or mission-driven organizations

Deep fluency across digital channels: SEO, paid media, email and SMS marketing, social strategy, analytics, and marketing technology

Proven ability to use data to drive editorial and strategic decisions — not just report on performance after the fact

Active engagement with AI-powered communications tools and a track record of using technology to scale team output and quality

Experience working with or managing external PR and media consultants

A genuinely mentorship-oriented management style — you find satisfaction in developing the people around you and you're specific about how you do it

Exceptional written communication skills and editorial judgment across formats and audiences

Comfort operating in a lean, fast-moving, high-stakes environment where resourcefulness and mission alignment matter as much as credentials

Preferred

Experience communicating about civil rights, democracy, immigration, reproductive rights, or climate and environmental justice

Familiarity with software platforms such as AirTable, ActionNetwork, MailChimp, SalesForce, ActiveCampaign, ActBlue

Experience managing Google Ad Grants accounts

Background in or strong familiarity with earned media strategy and crisis communications
