High School Band Director - Job Description

Position Overview

The High School Band Director is responsible for planning, developing, and directing a comprehensive instrumental music program that promotes student growth in musical skill, discipline, teamwork, and performance excellence. This position includes leadership of concert band, marching band, and related ensembles.

Primary Responsibilities

Instruction & Program Development
Teach high school instrumental music courses (concert band, marching band, etc.)
Develop and implement a sequential music curriculum aligned with state standards
Assess student performance and provide regular feedback for growth
Prepare students for performances, competitions, and evaluations
Band Leadership

Direct and organize the marching band program, including rehearsals, drill design, and performances
Conduct concerts, pep band events, and community performances
Select appropriate music and arrange scores when necessary
Student Development

Foster a positive, disciplined, and inclusive environment
Encourage leadership, responsibility, and teamwork among students
Support student participation in honor bands, solo/ensemble contests, and auditions
Operations & Administration

Manage band budget, inventory, and equipment
Coordinate transportation, scheduling, and logistics for events
Maintain accurate records of student participation, grades, and attendance
Collaboration & Communication

Communicate effectively with students, parents, administration, and staff
Collaborate with middle school/junior high directors to build program continuity
Work with booster clubs and community stakeholders to support the program
Supervision

Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, and travel
Ensure student safety and adherence to school policies
Qualifications

Required

Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field.
State teaching certification in Music Education.
Experience in directing high school band programs.
Ability to teach Music Appreciation or Choir.
Willingness to co-teach beginning band and assist with junior high band.
Must have or be willing to obtain a CDL within the first year of employment.
