The Iowa Primary Care Association (Iowa PCA) has supported Iowa’s community health centers for over 36 years to expand access to affordable, high quality, integrated care. The Iowa PCA, along with our sister companies INConcertCare (INCC) and IowaHealth+ (IH+), provides training, technical assistance, and shared services opportunities in quality improvement, value-based care, health information technology, and other areas. Through a partnership with Iowa Health and Human Services, we also serve as the statewide Behavioral Health Administrative Service Organization (BH-ASO), which expands our efforts and connect to the broader behavioral health safety net.

Purpose of Position
As part of the External Affairs team, the Communications Consultant will support and execute communications work relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the Iowa Primary Care Association, INConcertCare, and IowaHealth+ and community health centers. This individual is responsible for helping to plan, develop and implement communications, marketing, and public relations activities.

What You Will Do
Communications

Develop and execute internal and external communication plans that advance organizational goals.

Manage and maintain the organizational content calendar, identifying timely storytelling opportunities.

Partner across teams to gather input and produce content that highlights community health centers, partners, services, and impact.

Create and implement strategic messaging to support organizational initiatives and campaigns.

Lead digital communications across social media, website, and other platforms to strengthen visibility and engagement.

Ensure brand and message alignment across departments and communication channels.

Produce targeted newsletters for key audiences using Axios and Mailchimp, including drafting, editing, and coordinating approvals.

Support media relations through writing/editing materials, outreach support, and monitoring news coverage.

Coordinate onboarding communications so new hires have key tools, resources, and information from day one.

Branding

Support brand development initiatives that strengthen awareness and consistency.

Design high-quality visual assets (digital and print) that elevate campaigns and organizational communications.

Train and coach staff on brand standards and best practices.

Maintain and update core marketing resources and templates for internal teams.

Review and respond to requests for communications materials, ensuring quality and brand compliance.

Build and organize SharePoint sites to improve consistency, usability, and access to resources.

Create engagement materials that highlight patients/clients served, staff, partners, and community health center impact.

Serve as a communications partner to staff—advising on messaging, strategy, and project execution.

Develop advocacy campaigns and tools (including VoterVoice alerts) to support legislative and network priorities.

Event Management

Support planning and execution of the Iowa Community Health Conference with internal teams and contracted event planners.

Coordinate communications for advocacy, outreach, and organizational events.

Provide communications support for the Iowa PCA Communications and Engagement Committee.

Build and maintain sponsor relationships in support of annual events and initiatives.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered.

Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience required.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong proofreading and editing skills.

Graphic design skills, including use of Adobe and Canva, required.

Video and photo editing skills required.

Ability to craft compelling messages and stories that resonate with target audiences.

Strong collaborative and consultative skills; ability to cultivate productive working relationships.

Demonstrated ability to produce work with a high degree of accuracy under minimal supervision in a team-based environment.

Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and quality of deliverables.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong proofreading and editing skills.

Strong follow-up skills, able to move a project from start to completion.

Proficiency in various media platforms, both traditional and digital.

Work Schedule and Travel
This position is required to be on-site at least two days per work week. Some travel to community health centers and partners is required via vehicle or to conferences via air travel.
