Summary
The Narrative Medicine Specialist provides narrative medicine assessments, interventions, and education to support patients, families, and staff across Akron Children's. This role delivers individual and group-based services across care settings and contributes to program development, education, and research efforts to enhance patient and staff experience.
Responsibilities
Conduct narrative medicine assessments
to identify the needs of patients, families, and staff, informing appropriate interventions and support strategies.
Design and deliver individual and group narrative medicine interventions
across inpatient, outpatient, and home-based settings to support coping, communication, and well-being.
Facilitate narrative medicine programming and workshops , creating inclusive and engaging experiences for patients, families, and staff.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
to integrate narrative medicine approaches into care delivery and support patient- and family-centered care.
Support development of educational content and curricula , including contributions to continuing education for clinical and non‑clinical staff.
Participate in research and evaluation activities , contributing to data collection, program assessment, and advancement of narrative medicine practices.
Maintain accurate and confidential documentation , ensuring compliance with organizational policies and professional standards.
Stay current with narrative medicine practices and related fields , applying evidence-based and emerging approaches to program delivery.

Technical Expertise
Experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults in individual and group-based settings required.
Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
Strong interpersonal and problem‑solving skills required.
Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and sound judgment required.
Experience facilitating both virtual and in-person sessions preferred.
Experience writing in multiple genres preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) required; experience with Epic or similar EMR preferred.
Education and Experience
Education: Master's degree in Creative Writing (MFA), Narrative Medicine, Medical Humanities, or a related field required.
Certification: Certification in Narrative Medicine or Medical Humanities from an accredited institution is required within three years of hire.
Years of relevant experience: 2 years of providing comprehensive narrative medicine interventions for patients, families, and staff is required.
