We are a children’s theater company, based in Greenwich, CT, dedicated to creating high‑quality, imaginative, and safe productions for young performers and audiences. Our programs emphasize creativity, collaboration, and confidence‑building in a supportive environment. Our summer season includes Aladdin, At the Bandstand, and Chicago, and we are seeking a creative and practical Set Builder/Designer to bring these worlds to life.

Position Summary
The Set Builder/Scenic Designer will design, construct, and oversee the installation of stage sets and scenic elements for our summer productions. The role requires a blend of creativity, technical skill, and a strong focus on safety, especially in environments with children. OAA does not have a shop, so applicants must work off site.

Build and assemble set pieces using lightweight, child‑safe materials (primarily foam and similar alternatives)

Ensure all scenic elements are structurally sound, stable, and safe for use around children

Design and coordinate production of backdrops, including digital design and managing printing orders

Oversee load‑in, installation, and strike of sets

Maintain an organized and safe workspace throughout the build process

Stay within budget and timeline constraints

Be open to experimenting with new materials and techniques that enhance safety, efficiency, and visual impact

Preferred Materials & Methods

Experience working with foam and other lightweight materials

Familiarity with scenic painting and finishing techniques

Experience designing digital backdrops and coordinating with print vendors

Openness to exploring innovative or alternative set‑building methods

Qualifications

Experience in scenic design and/or set construction (theater experience preferred)

Strong understanding of stage safety practices, especially in youth environments

Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

Comfortable working on a deadline in a fast‑paced production schedule

Schedule & Commitment
Seasonal position aligned with summer production schedule of June 29 – August 2, 2026. Flexible hours with required availability during key build, tech, and installation periods.

Additional Notes
We value creativity, flexibility, and a solutions‑oriented mindset. While foam‑based construction and digitally printed backdrops have worked well for us in the past, we welcome new ideas that improve safety, efficiency, and visual storytelling. There is potential for this position to grow into a full‑time role if the relationship is a strong fit following the summer season.
