Temporary News Photographer / Video Editor (maternity leave coverage)
We are seeking a temporary News Photographer / Video Editor at KIAH-CW39 in Houston to support our newsroom during a maternity leave. This role plays a key part in gathering visuals, editing video, and supporting live and digital coverage across platforms.
The ideal candidate understands the importance of strong breaking‑news visuals, can edit compelling video under deadline, and communicates clearly in fast‑paced newsroom and field environments.
This is a temporary, full‑time position.
Responsibilities
Shoot video for news reports in the field and newsroom environments
Edit new video and feed video for television and digital platforms
Collaborate with reporters, producers, and executive produccer to plan coverage and meet editorial needs
Communicate clearly and consistently with reporters, producers, and newsroom managers regarding assignments, logistics, timing, and story development, especially during breaking news
Set up, compose, and execute compelling live reports
Operate TVU or similar live transmission equipment for field coverage, as assigned
Requirements and skills
High school diploma required; college coursework or degree preferred
Fluency in English
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly under deadline and in high‑pressure situations
Ability to communicate effectively with newsroom teams in person, by phone, and digitally
At least two years of experience operating professional video recording equipment preferred
Experience editing video for broadcast or digital news
Proficiency with newsroom technology, computers, and standard office equipment
Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Flexibility to work various shifts, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
Work environment and physical requirements
Fast‑paced, deadline‑driven newsroom environment
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Ability to lift, carry, and operate equipment such as cameras, tripods, and lighting gear weighing up to 25 pounds
Search video feeds and sources to support daily newscasts and digital content
Support digital and streaming coverage when in the field
Maintain and care for video and photography equipment
Assist with basic writing or content gathering as needed
Perform other duties as assigned
