Position Summary
The Part-time MAFAA Theatre Artistic Director is responsible for the artistic vision and leadership of the performance elements of an assigned MAFAA theatre production. This position collaborates with the MAFAA Theatre Facilitator to select show material, cast, and manage rehearsals from auditions to final performances.

MAFAA is currently seeking Artistic Directors for the following productions:
Into the Woods (musical) Fall 2026 - Production dates: September 24-27
Twelfth Night (play) - Spring 2027 - Production dates February 12-14
Oliver! (musical) Summer 2027 - Production dates July 7-11

Key Performance Indicators

Successful execution of the assigned Mineral Area Fine Arts Academy theatre production.
Performances that sell more than 75% of seating capacity.
Manage theater program assets relating to artistic direction (costumes, props, etc.)
Supervision of cast to ensure proper use, cleanliness, and security of the Theater spaces.
Maintain collaborative partnerships between the college, Mineral Area College Music
Department, Mineral Area College Art Department, and the Mineral Area Council on the Arts.

Essential Functions
1. Artistic Leadership
a. Serve as the artistic director of the current MAFAA theatrical production

b. Conduct auditions, cast shows, and lead all rehearsals from beginning to final performances.

c. Offer creative collaboration with the Technical Director on all technical aspects of productions, including coordinating with set, costume, lighting, and sound designers (varies per production)

d. Develop and execute the artistic vision for each production within the designated budget for the production

e. Plan, schedule, and lead all rehearsals

f. Provide acting direction, blocking, pacing, and performance coaching
2. Production Management & Administration:
a. Serve as the point of contact for all cast communication and rehearsal scheduling

b. Collaborate with the MAFAA Theatre Facilitator and the MAFAA Executive Director on production development, scheduling changes, and budgeting

c. Support the promotion of the theatre production to the community through social media, radio interviews, events, and other marketing efforts as requested

d. Timely submission of information requested for the performance program

e. Maintain clean, organized rehearsal and performance spaces

f. Recruit and mentor volunteers as necessary

Technical skills:
Proficiency in the use of computers, the internet, and various office equipment.
Lighting and sound equipment experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience
Education: High School Diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred.

Work Experience: Proven experience directing theatrical productions, preferably in an educational or community theatre setting. Experience teaching theatre to various age groups is preferred, but not required.

Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with all aspects of theatrical production, including design and technical elements.

This position requires periods of standing, walking, and sitting. The ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds is necessary. Evening and weekend work is required.

Pay rate based on a production-specific contract. Compensation, rehearsal timeline, and performance schedule will be outlined upon selection. Selected directors must sign the MAFAA Artistic Director contract prior to the start of rehearsals.
