The contractor will serve as a Legal Editor in a full-time or part-time role based in Washington, DC. The primary responsibility is to edit and format draft agency orders and decisions, ensuring all work is grammatically accurate and compliant with agency style guides, historical writing practices, and The Bluebook standards.
The candidate is required to work in the office.
Pay: $50.96/hour
Duties and Responsibilities
Style and Format Adherence: Correct faulty syntax and poor word choices, and ensure adherence to formal
grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules. Apply style guides and formatting standards. Verify the
format of legal citations and other legal references in accordance with The Bluebook.
Legal Database and Administrative Tasks: Review draft decisions for accuracy and completeness using
Westlaw (or other legal research platforms), pleadings, and administrative record materials.
Collaboration: Work directly with the legal department, other staff members, and judges.
Other Duties as Assigned: Assist the legal department, other staff members, and judges with
special projects as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in professional/technical writing and/or editing.
Preference is given to those with experience editing documents in an administrative, media, or legal setting
where work product is published and editing precision is required. Attention to detail is essential.
Education: A Bachelor's degree is required; Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Laws (L.L.M.), or other relevant postgraduate
degree or certification (paralegal or editor) is preferred.
Technical Proficiencies:
Experience with or demonstrated ability to learn how to use The Bluebook and/or other legal citation
manuals.
Experience with or demonstrated ability to learn how to use legal research databases such as Westlaw.
Experience with or demonstrated ability to learn and efficiently use WordPerfect.
